Fire Leech
Fire Leech
The fire leech is something like a combination of a leach and a lung fish. This creature looks almost exactly like a large leach with a flexible chiton armor and a pair of external lobes that act as sort of lungs. The life cycle of this creature is unusual to say the least. It spends a long time in a dormant state waiting for a forest fire. The egg cocoon must react with high temperatures such as a forest fire to begin the life cycle anew. Often this small creature can be found in campfire rings and fire pits or even homebound fireplaces in rural areas of Tower Rock. Once the cocoon hatches the young begin eating ash, charcoal and soot. Once the young feed enough they quickly develop a pair of lobes at about 1/3 of the body length. The lobes act something like a lung (catalytic converter). The lobes once developed after a few hours allow the fire leach to feed off of the smoke as well as the solids. For some unknown reason they prefer the smoke to the solids. Before death they mate, all are typical of leaches and hermaphroditic and just need to find another leach to breed. Once the fire is over they either bury into the ground or into the dead wood of an unburned tree. The Statesmen have developed this creature domestically to clean the air from the smelters and forges of Tower Rock.
