Corovashi Funeral Rites
History
The Corovair family had a crypt that held its dead, and it was protected by a litany of charms and wards. When Asmodeus cursed the family and struck them down, the family lands were mostly lost, including the crypt. After the Corovashi Clan formed and settled near the Demonwood inhumation of the dead became problematic. Dybbuk and other fiends would attempt to possess or use the dead, so another method had to be developed. Sky burial became the answer, due to the combination of being in the mountains and the importance of the raven to the Corovashi clan.
Execution
The burial rites are comprised of two parts, the first involves taking the corpse to the Corovashi Burial Ground and placing it at the celestial altar at the peak of the mountain. It is stripped naked, dismembered, and beheaded. Then after prayers are said incense are lit that local scavengers have come to recognize and the body will be left for a week, during which time ravens, vultures, and any other animals will feast on the corpse. After a week the second part occurs. Having been stripped of flesh, the bones are collected and burned in a final farewell and offering to Couladahd. The resulting ash is mixed into a concrete-like substance and a marker is made to remember the fallen, a rectangular stone with the name and imagery engraved into it, which is placed with the other markers at the burial ground.
Participants
Most of the clan will attend the funeral, though it is rare for the close family to attend the first part of the rites.
