Lortmil Mountains

The Lortmil Mountains are a chain of low mountains located in the central part of the Flanaess, forming the eastern border of the Sheldomar Valley.

Ecology

The Lortmil Mountains cover an area of some 60,000 square miles, a huge swath of land extending into various climate zones. They are noted for their gem and precious metal deposits. The gems found in the deep mines of the Lortmil Mountains are larger than those found in most other mines. A few of the highest mountain peaks, particularly in the northernmost end of the range, retain snow cover year-round, but the lower southerly peaks melt off during the summer heat of the lowlands. Heavy woodlands drape the northeastern slopes with cool, roanwood forests cloaked in mist and fog.   The southwestern portions of the range enjoy warmer temperatures and an almost tropical moisture from the Azure Sea. Those regions flourish with large stands of maples, beech., giving over to tangled underbrush at higher elevations. The heavy growth makes travel off regular routes difficult if not impossible in the southern Lortmils. In late Harvester, the slopes of these areas blaze with autumnal splendor, but in the winter months, heavy rains impede travel.   Beneath the mountains, a chain of interconnecting tunnels, mines, natural caverns, caves, and chambers connect to create the so-called "Low Road' from Principality of Ulek all the way north to the Lorridges.

Inhabitants

The Lortmils are home to many dwarves, gnomes, and halflings; human settlements are scattered throughout the hills as well, as are scattered flocks of aarakocras.   The Lortmils were once the home of considerable orcish and goblinoid settlements, but these were driven into the Pomarj during the Hateful Wars.

Features and Settlements

The hidden valley of Esmerin, home to a mixed community of tallfellow halflings and stone giants, is somewhere within the Lortmil Mountains. The village of Thrunch is also in the Lortmils, within the borders of the Principality of Ulek.
