Crafting in First Light

Crafting 101

Crafting in First Light comes in essentially three different flavors: consumables, magical armor and weapons, and spell crafting. In this article we will look at all three options as well as give tables describing some basic recipes and tips for procuring the ingredients you need to craft whatever it is you are looking for.   First things first, however, ingredients. Everything you will attempt to craft in First Light will have a required list of components necessary to create the item or spell, these components are known as ingredients and can be found throughout the world of First Light.   Ingredients are separated into their own categories: botanical reagents, game reagents, magical reagents, metal reagents, and legendary reagents.

Botanical Reagents

Botanical reagents are procured from various plants within the world. Some are more common in certain areas than others and you can count on reagents that need to be imported being more expensive than those found locally. Optionally, you can always search the wilderness for your own reagents using your nature and survival skills to locate flora with an increasing skill check depending on the rarity (DC 5 for common items up to DC 25 for flora that may be rare in your section of the world).   Botanical reagents are commonly used in crafting consumables and spell crafting, many are also featured in cooking which will be featured in a separate article to describe how cooking works on First Light.

Game Reagents

Game reagents refer to crafting components obtained from various wild animals in the world. These reagents could be anything from skins to connective tissue and organs. While less commonly used in consumables (aside from various glues and gelatins) these components become important in the creation of various weapons and armor; as well as crafting new spells or altering the effects of some old ones. Game reagents can be purchased at town butchers or from hunters you may run into in the wild or the adventurous can choose to obtain their own reagents by hunting wild animals and succeeding on a set of checks. Use your animal handling, nature, and survival checks to be sure you can kill and harvest the appropriate parts for your needs.   Another obvious use of game reagents is the use of animal parts in cooking and will be covered in greater detail there.

Magical Reagents

Magical reagents refer to a wide variety of components which have a use in just about every skill there is. These components can be easily obtained for a small fee from magical shoppes or can be found after defeating certain types of creatures. Rare magical reagents can only be harvested from the bodies of certain magical creatures in the world, and they must be hunted down by a party of seasoned adventurers that wish to claim these spoils. Some components that fall into this category include ancient dragon scales and scutes, ever-frozen ice, smokeless flame, and crystallized lightning.   While used in every form of crafting, magical reagents tend to really shine when used to make weapons and spells.

Legendary Reagents

Legendary reagents refer to components that can only be found from hunting powerful creatures on the other planes of existence as well as taking on powerful eidolons of the physical plane. These items are used to craft all the highest tier options and cannot be bought from shops. Those that seek these components are either fearless or stupid, but successfully obtaining them will bring opportunities and power beyond anything you’ve imagined.

Honorable Mentions

As an honorable mention, materia can also be used as crafting components in which they can sometimes be used in place of a magical reagent but it should be noted that materia is exceedingly rare and would be consumed in the process.
