Deran

The Deran, or Derani, people are descendants of nomadic tribes that settled along the wide stretch of the western edge of the Strathwine barony where it borders with Asainia, especially along the Crystal Bay coast.

Languages

The primary language of the Derani people is Derish, though as they live along the border between the Strathwine Barony and the Asainia Grand Duchy many of them are multilingual.

Rites of Passage

Other than marriage and birth blessings, military service is considered a rite of passage for the Deran peoples. While the two are events calling for vibrant and elaborate occasions, the latter is no less celebrated. Military service for one of the Deran is voluntary and a mark of pride. On leaving, the man or woman is celebrated as achieving this mark in their life. Once they return from the customary three years of service, another celebration is held to mark the completion of this rite of passage into adulthood.

Clothing

Most Deran clothing is not that different than most Balelands clothing. But there are certain exceptions that have roots into their nomadic past - and for some Deran, the present. First would be the 'Deran hat'. This hat is a flat crown, wide brim hat worn by most Deran - men or women - when outside. The hat evolved to provide shade and protection for the eyes while traveling. The next would be the Deran vest that is similar to a waistcoat vest only this has long sleeves. Last would be the Deran oilcoat. Usually an autumn-shaded color and fashioned from denim and waterproofed with oil.

Skills, the Arts, and Architecture

As a throwback to their nomadic past, all Deran children are taught the basics of tracking, animal husbandry and other skills necessary to their ancestors. In addition, Deran education includes a deep understanding of mathematics and mathematical theory. From a young age, Deran children are taught basic mathematics so that once they are approaching young adult age, they are expected to have a good foundation in geometry and statistical analysis.

I do like the idea of a rite of passage is a military service time. Reminds me of a Citizen's Republic or Citizens Stratocracy, which I don't see done much these days!

Thanks! The idea comes from the culture being very small and scattered in the past, so working together for such things as defense, stayed with them.   Again, thanks! :D
