Desert Floods
Desert is, well, a desert. Not much rain happens here and the majority of the year is dry and hot. The only time this area experiences rain is during the rainy season, and even then not as much as the other areas. It does get rainier on top of the Cliffs, where the Long River comes from, which makes the water level of the river rise. This is very important, because it means that the river will flood the flood plains along the river. This, of course, provides the area with fertile land needed for agriculture.
Desert Agriculture
Everyone knows Fairy Gardens to be the main agricultural region of our world, but that’s not to say that other places don’t grow their own food. You can find fields and farmlands all across the world, all the way to Desert. In Desert, the Riverside region is the main agricultural region that provides the majority of food for the area and even for some regions of atlds.
All of the Desert relies on Riverside’s floodplains which makes this region and its agriculture probably the most important aspect of this region.
Floods
Because of the importance of Riverside’s agriculture for Desert, a lot of people rely on this land and its fertility, which comes from these yearly rains and floods. While the rainy season is in general important for all of the world, people here celebrate it even more, and each year fear that the flood may fail. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, you know the whole year will be a disaster. This will lead to a lesser harvest, less food for people, more need to import it and less food to export, leading to loss of profits for the area. And food and money and the two things you don’t wanna run out of.
But as much as the flood may fail every once in a while, there may be an exceptionally big flood other years. These floods will occur about every 3 to 5 years and will be a cause for a great celebration. A particularly good flood will, of course, lead to better fertility of the land, better harvest, more food for people, less need to import and more to export.
Importance of floods in people’s lives
Because of all of the reasons listed above, people’s lives in this region are especially focused around the anticipation of the yearly flood. This region is known for its special devotion to both Glitter God and Satan and especially big religious festivals that are organized in months leading up to the rainy season. They do their best to show their devotion to gods in hopes of being blessed with the major flood. If they are to fail to properly appease the goods, the flood will fail as well.
People will organize similar festivals as a sign of gratitude for the flood in the beginning of the next year as well, and don’t forget the grand harvest day festivals, that are similar to the ones celebrated in Fairy Gardens.
