Mysterious Ancient Cult

It may be true that today we generally know the ancient human race to be emotionally, spiritually and creatively pretty much desolate and empty, that’s not actually quite true. Sure, in comparison to us they don’t have much to show for in those areas, but they were still quite artistic and spiritual in their own ways. Religion seemed to be a big part of their lives since the dawn of time, and they liked to express that through many art pieces, paintings and carvings. Still today we’re finding and digging up ruins of their most sacred places adorned with many images depicting the gods, saints and the scenes from their religious texts. Thanks to this, we were able to piece together a lot about the ancient cultures and religions, but yet, there is one religion or a cult that seems pretty obscure and unresearched.

As we already know, people liked to paint the walls of their buildings with such religious and cultural images, and, as it seems there is one image in particular that seems to be particularly prevalent, especially among the more modern wall paintings. The image is of, well, let’s say a very specific part of male anatomy. Wall paintings of this have been found on numerous walls all across our world. As it appears, the people who painted these images on the walls must have been members of a very large worldwide religion or organization, and yet, there is very little known about this religion. No ancient texts seem to report anything of such a religion, organization or a cult. But that didn’t stop our historians from trying to figure this thing out.

What do we know?

One thing that we know is that these images were very common, but they seemed to mainly be these quick drawings drawn on walls of random buildings across town. That suggests that there weren’t any official buildings of this religion. These drawings may have served more as a code or means of communication between the cult members. The image may have signified certain important locations where the cult members would commonly meet up, or it could even be used to mark the homes of the cult members. This could mean that this was a very secretive cult, which explains why we haven’t found much information about it today.

But what does the symbol mean? The symbol of well, male body part, could mean just about anything. It could be something straightforward, it is what it is, the cultists are really just people who like this body part very much. As we know now, in the ancient times admitting that this is something you like as a man wasn’t exactly a good idea, and people have used all sorts of codes to express how they felt about that, so it wouldn’t be out of place to assume this is what’s going on with these wall paintings.

But, it could be something else entirely. Often throughout history people have used male and female body parts to represent fertility as well. As we know, the climate changes in the ancient world were, among other things, detrimental to agriculture that was important for production of food and goods to sustain the population. It would be no wonder for people to create these wall paintings to appeal to their gods and hope for the better fertility of the land in the coming seasons. As such, it would even make sense that this wasn’t a cult or a religion as such, but more of a general sentiment that people were expressing through these wall paintings.

Then again, it could mean something completely abstract and symbolic. For example, near these paintings we can often find inscriptions criticizing politicians of that era. These inscriptions could very well mean that the politicians of that area were well, we don’t need to explain this one since the same insult is still used today.

In conclusion

However, the prevalence and consistency of these wall paintings indicate that this must have been a part of some worldwide movement that had to be very important to the people of the ancient era. Despite all the disagreements the ancient people had with each other and all the wars they fought, this seems to be the one thing all of the world appreciated equally. Though clearly a very obscure cult that we don’t know much about today, it reminds us that even the ancient people were willing and able to step together for the things that are truly important.
