Shop Owner / Crafter
When you walk through the streets of our towns, you may notice that there are many shops all over the place. Shops with food, clothing, decorative or practical items, shops with materials for arts and crafts, and so much more. What you’ll probably notice is that all of these shops are small, owned by one or a few people who make the items they sell themselves.
Becoming a crafter/shop owner
People of our world are very creative and take great pride in their work. Traditionally, parents will teach their children their craft, and when the children are old enough, they will start working at the parent’s shop, and make their own product to sell there. This is how it basically works, but things do get complicated.
For some, this will be it, they will join their parents, and take over the shop when the time comes. But others might eventually leave and open their own shop. This could be for many reasons, often because the child has their own vision of what they want to do that might be different from their parents. Oh well, this sometimes happens, and good parents let their children move on to do what makes them happy.
Another reason for a child to leave is, if they want to change their career completely. Sometimes that means learning a new craft and opening their shop for their new items. They might do this at any point of their life.
Running a shop
Some people do run these shops on their own, but more often than not they will have help. Sometimes parents and children will work together, and sometimes it will be a group of friends. Sometimes all of these will create the items for the shop, and sometimes each person will take care of their own part of the business. For example, one will create items, another one will obtain the materials and the third one will keep track of the finances. Of course, each shop is different and works differently, so there are a lot of options for how they run their business.
Because these shops are small and owned and run by only a few people, you will find that they more often than not have completely unreasonable work hours. Don’t worry though, most of these shops have online shops set up on Shopsy, or similar services.
What do these shops sell?
The shops sell pretty much anything and everything you can imagine. Clothes, food, furniture, decorative items, cosmetics, toys, jewelry and more.
Because there are a lot of these shops, each crafter has to offer something new and unique, something that will stand out from the rest and give customers a reason to come to their shop. If you want to become a crafter yourself, you have to keep this in mind; you’ll have to come up with something new and interesting to attract clients and stay in business.
Or not. Each shop can only do so much, and often people aren’t looking for something most unique and interesting, they just need a pair of pants or a loaf of bread or some regular item, so no matter what you do you’ll probably do alright.
