Flute Player (or Sorcerer or Wizard or Warlock)

The Flute Player (or Sorcerer, or Wizard, or Warlock) is such an important profession that the whole world is named after it.   Flute Players (or Sorcerers, or Wizards, or Warlocks) are the only people capable of harnessing the magic of the world and using it as they see fit. It's a huge amount of power channelled through a thin wooden tube with holes (and some epic lung capacity), and it has almost no cost to the Flute Player (or Sorcerer, or Wizard, or Warlock) in question (other than breathlessness and the exponentially growing chance of having your soul taken away. Nothing out of the ordinary).   Perks of the profession include being treated as a living deity wherever you go, being asked to play at random wedding ceremonies, and being able to change the entire make up of the universe with a simple atonal melody.   Yet, this somehow not the most popular profession in the world. In fact, any given kingdom will be honoured to have a handful of Flute Players (or Sorcerers, or Wizards, or Warlocks) at their disposal at any given time. It must be something to do with the fact that every Flute Player (or Sorcerer, or Wizard, or Warlock) who is not killed in combat by another Flute Player (or Sorcerer, or Wizard, or Warlock) eventually has their soul taken away by the same magic that made them the strongest beings to ever walk the world.

Perception

Purpose

Flute Players (or sorcerers, or wizards, or warlocks) play the flute (or do sorcery, or do wizardry, or wage war with... their hair? Probably not. They mostly stick with flute playing). And by playing the flute they mean making the most amazing magic happen. Shift the fabric of reality (and give it a good wash if it's dirty or smells bad). Challenge the laws of physics. But mostly play the flute.

Social Status

Flute Players (or Sorcerers, or Wizards, or Warlocks) might as well be walking, living deities. After all, they have the power to give people riches beyond their wildest dreams, or to send them to a particularly nasty corner of the damnation dimension.

Operations

Tools

A Flute Player (or Sorcerer, or Wizard, or Warlock) needs a flute. It is trough the flute that they channel their magic. They also need the flute to play open air concerts and to provide background music for royal balls and masquerade dances, without which a lot of polical intrigue and plotting could never take place.

Dangers & Hazards

There is a tiny little risk that the magic will consume your soul within the first year becoming a Flute Player (or Sorcerer, or Wizard, or Warlock). The risk increases exponentially for each year in the profession, until it becomes an almost certainty by the time a Flute Player (or Sorcerer, or Wizard, or Warlock) reaches retirement age. The only Flute Players (or Sorcerers, or Wizards, or Warlocks) who have not had their souls consumed by magic were those who were killed by other Flute Players (or Sorcerers, or Wizards, or Warlocks). "Retirement" is the profession's euphemism for "made magically soulless"
Alternative Names
Flute Players can also be known as Sorcerers, or Wizards, or Warlocks (and usually in parenthesis like this, for dramatic effect). Each Flute Player (or Sorcerer, or Wizard, or Warlock) choose which term to use from themselves.
