Mortalia

Mortalia is the capital of Neponia. It is a large city that has spread its tentacles of urbanisation further than any kingdom ever thought possible. At its centre is the House of Valois, the castle home to the royal family. Mortalia used to be contained within the castle's defensive walls, but it has grown so much over the past two centuries that builders eventually gave up trying to keep pace with such rapid urbanisation. Now only the so-called "historic centre" is encased in the original walls. The families living there are mostly noble, plus a few important commoners whose family members have joined noble households as their lovers.   Neponians and foreigners alike have spent countless sleepiness nights pondering over the reason for the city's alarming growth rate, but no consensus has been reached as of yet. Some attribute it to the Valois's monetary incentive to move peasants into the city's dominion as cheap labourers (and are promptly put down by those who point out significant growth even before the Valois's ascend to power). Others think peasants are generally bored of peasant life and want a change in their circumstances (and are promptly put down by city-dwellers who whine about how they would love to abandon everything and move to the countryside, then yell at anyone who asks them why they have not done so yet). A small number of enlightened individuals consider it be caused by a multitude of complex factors intrinsically linked to each other in such a way as to make any linear, simple explanation useless (and are promptly put down by everyone else, because people like simple answers that don't contain complicated words such as "multitude" and "intrinsically").   The fact is, Mortalia is a world inside a city, and they are proud of it.
