Tauvaastäit

Tauvaastäit (a.k.a. Grandfather of the Woods)

According to the Kivan people, there is a ancient spirit that serves as guardian to the Forest of Stars. Walk away from Jausai, leave the paths and venture into the dark depths of the forest, where the leaves are so thick the sun doesn't reach the ground. The only light comes from the glimmering Starflys overhead, casting the forest in starlight.   Once you are sufficiently alone, you might see another light: blue, shining eyes emerging out of the mist. Don't be afraid; Strangers are never this tall. At first it appears to be a Great Elk, but there has never been a specimen so perfect. It's the largest of its kind, with rich, shiny fur and eyes that glow like blue fire. In the fall, starfly larva make their chrysalises directly on his antlers, so they dangle with light. When he gets close enough, you can see past the blue aura around the eyes to see the ancient wisdom and intelligence in their dark depths.   At this point, it is important that you bow. Tauvaastäit is the grandfather of all who dwell in the woods and must be respected. If you have any food on you, it would be appropriate to rest it on the ground at his feet as an offering. If you have no food, then an offering of a precious item like jewellery would be appreciated. If you have nothing of value to offer him (except a weapon; you must never even take out a weapon in the presence of Tauvaasäit, let alone offer it to him!), then you say, "My grandfather, I am sorry, I have nothing to offer you but this song." Songs about nature, family, history, or the gods are the most recommended, but if you're really stumped, even a raunchy tavern song is better than nothing.   If Tauvaastäit is pleased with your offering and behaviour, he will lead you back to the path and possibly give you a gift. But if you insult him, or if he senses wickedness in your behaviour, he will turn away from you and walk away. After that, no matter what you do, you will never find your way back to the path.
