Contraturris
There is no land at the bottom of the world - only sheets of ice. All along the southern coast of the continents, however, is the region known as Contraturris. It consists of frozen archipelagos and empty tundras hemming in the southern extent of the world's landmasses.
The region is sparsely inhabited. Its denizens are un-organized bands of hunter-gatherers who make their living from whaling among the icebergs. There is little in the way of natural resources, and even if they did exist, the environment would make any large-scale extraction impossible. So, the rest of the world doesn't pay much attention to this frozen land. Its snow sits pristine unsullied by the rise and fall of civilizations.

Fauna & Flora
Life is hard this far south, but animals manage to thrive. The region is home to many species of penguins and other flightless birds, like Rockhopper birds. Seals lounge on beaches of stone and further inland, the tundra is home to yaks, caribou, woolly mammoths, and other large and furry animals
There are no trees in this part of the world. The flora is limited to whatever hardy scrubs can survive the winters (which typically fall to -70 degrees and last much longer than the summers). Wildflowers appear on the tundra in late spring, but further south, on the beaches and islands, there is nothing but ice and rock.
