Galardi Species in Flightless | World Anvil

Galardi

They're dirty. They eat anything. And they're everywhere.   Galardis are medium-sized mammals that are common across dry, sub-tropical regions. They prefer forested areas, but the promise of trash heaps and vermin in cities has lured them out of the woods. They're usually harmless to humans and run away if approached, but a cornered galardi can and will bite.   They're often trapped and then used in blood racing, a sport that races one hungry galardi against a few leptis. Breeding them in captivity is illegal, because if they get out, they just add to the pest population in cities. Of course, they're still often bred by seasoned players trying to get the fastest, most skillful hunter.

Basic Information

Anatomy

They are quadrupedal and have a narrow head with a pointed snout. Their ears are triangular and sit atop their head. They're about 4 feet long and two feet high at the shoulder, with short legs and a bushy tail. They have four claws on each foot, which are retractable.

Ecology and Habitats

They live in the wild in sparsely forested areas across central Kaabara. They are adept climbers and spend their days lounging in forks in the trees between scouting for meals. With the rise of human cities, they moved toward the source of refuse that provided an easy meal. They live around the dirtier parts of cities now, making their homes in dark alleys, burrowing under things, or - preferably - in a crook of a baobab tree within the city. They're commonly considered pests because they are dirty, dig through trash, leave droppings on the road, snarl at small children, and generally get in the way. Though they're easy to shoo, most would rather not deal with them.

Dietary Needs and Habits

They are omnivores, though they prefer meat. They are primarily scavengers, but will hunt small rodents or birds if given the chance. In urban areas, they scavenge through trash piles. In the wild, they use their excellent sense of smell to locate abandoned carcasses and eat the remains.
