Maran Republic

The Maran Republic ruled a large swath of land on the eastern coast of southern Cuyania during the Second Age. At its height, it included land as far west as the Iceforge Mountains and the northern edge of Armorca.   Maran culture contributed to the advancement of mathematics and ideas of democracy. They had one of the world's earliest government systems with democratic ideas, and represented a return to a golden age of civilization after humanity's great upheaval from the First Reckoning.   The republic lasted about 700 years, before being brought to its knees by the Red Rot pandemic and ultimately crumbling from the Second Reckoning.

Structure

The republic was organized into city-states, each with a governing body and political leader. Smaller towns and villages were tied to the nearest city-state. The way each city-state chose their leader varied; some had a democratic process and some had forms of monarchies.

The leaders of each city serve as senators in the republic, which met a few times a year in the capital. They voted on matters that would affect the whole civilization, such as military or inter-city trade. Of the leaders, a "king" is chosen by hiding a small golden bead in a large pot of curry. Every member of the senate takes a dish and the gods favour the most righteous to find the bead, or so the story goes. The king serves for a term of 5 years, and then the ritual is repeated.
