Desolation - Formerly Night's Edge

I'm not Blackrazor. That guy has issues.
— Night's Edge

Appearance

The appearance of this weapon varied, but it usually appeared as a pitch black, elegant two-handed longsword.

Mechanics

Weapon (Greatsword), Rare, Requires Attunement

This weapon is a +1 Greatsword. An attuned wielder also gains +2 AC. If the wielder is a Warlock who has the Pact of the Blade, the form of Desolation can be changed when summoned as if it were a normal pact weapon.

Additionally, Desolation has sentience. It can communicate telepathically with its bonded wielder, and has recently gained the ability to speak verbally in Common. It can perceive its immediate surroundings, but it is not clear how far this perception goes.

Desolation desires to consume the magic of other hexblades, enhancing its own power and absorbing some of their abilities. The effect of this absorption is depends on the magic item being absorbed and is at the DM's discretion. Thus far, it has gained the following abilities:

  • The wielder can use an action to have Night's Edge cast Darkness. This does not consume a spell slot, and Night's Edge maintains concentration (thus the wielder is not concentrating on the spell). This feature cannot be used again until the wielder has completed a long rest.
  • The wielder can, once a day, end any magical effect as per Dispel Magic, except this effect explicitly works on Walls of Force.
  • Desolation can constantly detect magic as per the spell.

History

Bron of the Hands of Fate discovered the blade in a ruined mansion in Phandalin. It appeared as a silvery blade with the family crest of the Tresendar family upon it. Once attuned, however, the true nature of Night's Edge was revealed. The blade had been sent as an agent of the Raven Queen.

After the Severing, Night's Edge connection with the Raven Queen was also severed, and the blade gained greater sentience and free will. Even upon escaping the Prime Material and being able to sense its master, the blade retained this free will, much to its own confusion.

After absorbing several new hexblades, the blade's intelligence grew. It took a new name (Desolation) reflect its new nature.
