Frostclaw
What use is life, if it is devoid of glory?
Appearance
This greataxe appeared to be made of ice and glows softly with an inner light.
Mechanics
Weapon (greataxe, sentient), Rare, Requires Attunement by a Barbarian
Functions as a +1 Greataxe. The weapon is sentient (see below). Once attuned, the wielder's eyes become a deep, brilliant blue. It gives off blue light, the intensity of which can be controlled by the wielder from a barely visible glow to shedding blue light as brightly as a lantern.
Additionally, when the wielder rages, the axe's power flows through them. Their body is covered in a fine frost that resembles a white dragon's scales. These scales grant a +2 bonus to AC (but are too weak yet to provide any real protection against fire). While raging, the wielder's eyes frost over, becoming as white as the middle of a blizzard.
Personality
Frostclaw is sentient (See stats in sidebar). It can hear and see out to 60' in all directions. It is Chaotic Neutral and is supremely vain. It exists only to enhance its own legend and sees all wielders as tools to make its tales match its perception of itself. Frostclaw subtly influences its wielders to ever more daring acts of valor and courage, until they are downright reckless. This process began with Thrum Wyrmbane, and continues to this day.
History
Said to be the weapon of the renowned warrior Thrum Wyrmbane, a champion of the White Worm tribe many years ago. He gained his name when a hunting party he led interrupted the white dragon Kalorath at her kill. The dragon killed many of the party, but (according to legend) Thrum climbed the beast's tail and drove this axe into the dragon's skull to save his tribe. The life force of the dragon was said to be absorbed by the axe, which is now forever cold to the touch, even fresh out of a forge's fire.
It has passed to many owners since then, including the minor orc warlord Gurukk Frost Axe. Taud took the axe from the orc's dead hands and used it to great effect against the Cult of Elemental Evil, until he was killed.
