Session 12: Into Khundrukar

General Summary

13 Flamerule, 1393 DR (Day 14)

After everyone got some rest, the group headed back out to the dwarven hall. They were attacked by a flock of bat-sized insect creatures who sucked a little blood from them, but were annihilated with confidence. Exploring the room, the party found a cool door on the other side, with scorched skeletons decorating the floor around it. Shava wasted no time trying to open it, but was immediately set on fire by some trap mechanism. She survived the endeavor, but keeping the door open and finding out what’s behind it took more effort than expected. Unfortunately, the tiny room seemed to contain only the fire-breathing mechanism and not much else. The disappointed group headed down the wide stairs to the next level.   The cavern had some dwarven-crafted stone steps within, but everything else seemed to be formed by nature. A river was flowing through the narrow passage, which lead to an open room. More annoying bugs were stalking below the ceiling and attacked the group. Those were taken out quickly as well.   Moving on, the heroes stumbled upon a dwarven burial site. Many stone tombs were laid out in the area, with only a few of them containing a body. This was the place where Durgeddin’s people expected to be laid to rest after their inevitable demise.   What’s more curious, the rest of the large room was covered with all kinds of strange fungi, mushrooms and puffballs. Kethra found these especially interesting and ran to look. Unfortunately, a bad stomach was all that resulted from the investigations. She started heading back to the others, but was attacked by two snake-like monstrosities from atop a ledge. She fought back, and with the help of her comrades from afar, managed to overcome the threat. Across the room, a great stone door with Durgeddin’s mark blocked the way forward.

Next up, the group discovered a small room with skeleton remains covered with yellow mold. It was determined to be poisonous, and Kethra, after being buffed by a Protection from Poison spell from Shava, wandered in the room dancing among the mold. Unfortunately, the resistance didn’t quite provide immunity, so after mostly clearing the room of the poisonous plant, the noxious fumes rendered her unconscious. The party took some time to discuss this before bringing Kethra back up.   Damian decided to use a more cautious approach and loot the skeleton bodies from afar using Mage Hand. This proved successful and he obtained a mastercraft longsword with Durgeddin’s mark on it. Baron Althon would definitely be interested in that.   The heroes carefully continued their exploration, and were surprise attacked by stealthy troglodytes hidden among the cavern wall. One of them managed to also release a bear held in captivity in a nearby room. Thorbjörn took most of the heat from the beast and the threat was overcome.   Damian and his rat familiar discovered that one of the exits from this room lead back outside. But since the heroes still had some work to do, they headed back to the burial room to find out what’s behind the massive dwarven door. Damian’s lockpicking skills came in handy and got it open. The group continued up the stairs to another floor. A small beautiful room had three dwarven statues decorating it. The excited Thorbjörn wasted no time and rushed to take a closer look. Unfortunately, the trapped statues triggered their weapon attacks causing some wounds to him. Meanwhile, Shava found some tracks leading behind one of the statues. After doing a little investigating, she found a secret door leading up a set of stairs.   The heroes excitedly pushed on, triggering an alarm halfway through, apparently warning anyone nearby of their presence. Thorbjörn was too excited to be concerned over that and headed up. A large hall with elaborate carvings and great stone columns carved into dragons and giants opened up. Across the room, from behind a beautiful throne, a low and threatening female voice greeted him in Dwarvish: ‘Go back the way you came! This is the only warning you’ll get!’
