Session 3: Goblins, Gnomes and Elf Pudding

General Summary

The heroes collectively managed to light the giant rat nest on fire, but lost the opportunity for a surprise attack. And so the giant rat queen, along with her smaller rodent followers, rushed towards the group. Seeing this, Thorbjörn decided it was better to shut the door and contain the pests to allow some time to regroup. Before that, Norg delivered a Sleep spell inside the room to temporarily take out a few vermins. This change of plans proved successful, and when the rats finally broke out of their burning prison, they were taken out one by one – even Guthash, the monstrous and swollen queen.   After taking care of the infestation, a well-deserved rest was in order. The group took it easy for an hour or so, replenishing their reserves and waiting for the fire burning the nests to die down while taking care not to wander too close. This allowed for the search of what remained of the nests, which revealed some monetary wealth in the form of coins, and a golden ring with the name ‘Karakas’ carved inside – the last remnant left behind by a dead adventurer apparently first mauled by the rats and afterwards consumed by fire.   With that taken care of, it was finally time to head into goblin territory. With Meepo guiding the way, great care was taken to anticipate any potential traps and threats. Shava’s keen senses helped to detect and avoid an alarm bell attached to a door leading to the goblin outpost. However, the brave heroes forgot that loud conversation without closing the door would still alert any potential guards, and so two goblins manning the outpost launched their arrows towards the group before backing away to prepare an ambush.   Luckily, the heroes prepared well for the potential ambush and after inevitably walking into it, had things well under control with Hedid focusing on defense taking most of the heat while others could launch attacks. Unfortunately, Cora suffered a bad enough blow to knock her down. Hedid, seeing this, sacrificed her defenses to get Cora back up using her divine energy. This made the paladin vulnerable to attacks and several arrows later, Hedid was the next to fall unconscious. Luckily, everyone else managed to deal enough damage to gain an overall advantage and defeat the goblin ambush. The last of them to still stand escaped through a door, and although attempts were made to stop him, managed to get out of harm’s way and apparently deliver a warning about the threat.
Since nobody had any means to restore Hedid to consciousness, the heroes prepared as best as they could hoping to defend against any threats while waiting for the half-elf to recover. Meanwhile, they discovered a sturdy locked door and after careful consideration and thorough investigation, Thorbjörn decided it was best to kick it down. After several attempts he succeeced and the group found themselves inside a prison-like facility. Three kobolds were captured and being held here. They weren’t very cooperative, but Meepo’s presence and the fact they were not immediately killed by the heroes convinced them of their relatively safe situation. After sharing some information, they headed back to their clan members in the kobold-controlled area of Sunless Citadel.   Another prisoner was being kept here – a gnomish down-on-his-luck adventurer kept in a tiny cage much too small even for his gnomish stature. Pock joined forces with Thorbjörn in order to help get his fellow gnome out of this predicament, and eventually they succeeded in opening the cage. The small fellow introduced himself as Erky, and explained how he was captured by the goblins months ago and being held here all this time in poor conditions. Luckily, Erky knew enough healing magic to keep himself comfortable. This also allowed him to assist with another problem – getting Hedid back on her feet. After doing so, Erky implied that he would not be happy letting all of the pain and effort to go to waste, and felt some sort of reward in the form of treasure is in order for him. So, he decided to accompany the party deeper into Sunless Citadel to provide his assistance in the hopes of getting some fortune in return.
