Deepstone

"In depths unknown, stone endures"

History

Deepstone, the ancestral home of the Dwarves , lies hidden within the Iron Pass mountains, its colossal stone and metal gates accessible only by a treacherous, winding mountain path leading to a hanging stone bridge. The city itself is a sprawling fortress carved deep into the mountainside, with labyrinthine tunnels and mines stretching ever further below ground. The gates of Deepstone are said to be impregnable, a testament to dwarven craftsmanship and resilience.

In the ancient Titan Wars, Deepstone played a pivotal role, yet during the Heavenly Clash, it aimed for neutrality. However, as the conflict wore on, the city ultimately aligned with the new gods, recognizing the shift in power. After the war, a great exodus occurred as many dwarves departed from Deepstone, resettling throughout the lands—most notably in Bastion. These dwarves, known today as "sun dwarves," broke ties with their mountain kin, and the reasons behind their departure remain a mystery. Despite shared ancestry, they rarely communicate with the deep dwarves, and the division between the two branches has only deepened.

When the Sundering struck, Deepstone sealed its gates for close to two centuries, effectively cutting off its people from the outside world. During this isolation, the deep dwarves grew distinct from their surface counterparts, embracing an even deeper devotion to tradition and craft. Meanwhile, the sun dwarves began to adapt to life above ground, forming distinct cultures and forging new alliances.

Now

Only a few decades ago, Deepstone reopened its doors, yet the city remains incredibly secluded, its residents cautious of outsiders. Relations with other cities are limited mainly to trade, especially of fine crafts and precious metals. Chief among these exports is fluxstone, a rare and prized material uniquely suited for creating artifacts that interact with elemental stones, a mineral that further establishes Deepstone's legacy of masterful craft and resilience.
