Planetouched
"Just unlucky from the start I guess"
History
Right after the Sundering, when chaos reigned supreme across the continent, a certain type of Plane Tear was particulary common. These were called chaos gates, as they did not open to one of the elemental planes but to one of primal chaotic energy.
From these gates, chaotic energy surged and altered the surroundings in ever changing and unexpected ways. Strange weather phenomena, gravity acting erratically, creatures acting and looking out of place are all common signs of an open chaos gate. As erratic strings of good or bad luck are a possible sign of a chaos gate opening, it is common in some places of the vulpine wastes to flip coins as you go about your business. When an unusually long string of heads or tails happens, it might be a sign that chaotic energies have started to seep through.
If someone gets too close to one of these gates, or jumps to the other side, they can also become permanently altered both physically and mentally. Humans that have somehow been touched by chaotic energies have had their skin change, grown horns or even developed strange powers. These Kin are commonly called by the name of their 'affliction': planetouched.
Another unfortunate thing that can spew from these gates are strange entities to these lands, not entirely dissimilar to the plane elementals. These are creatures bound by different laws to ours, that can grant boons or curses to whomever crosses their path. Depending on the place or type of creature, they can be viewed as demons, devils, imps or even demigods. Another way to become planetouched is to enter some sort of pact or contract with one of these creatures, and therefore become branded by them in exchange for some boon or bounty. In these cases, the planetouched is more often referred as a tiefling: someone who has traded something in return for a devil's power.
Now
Planetouched are not commonly found in most cities or villages, as they are usually shunned and viewed with much supersistion and disdain. Since there are no clear differences between a regular planetouched and a tiefling, it is easier for most people to assume all planetouched are tieflings. And regardless, even planetouched that did not make a pact are said to bring bad luck and bad tidings, as whatever chaotic energies altered them are still surely present within.
