Nearwood
Nearwood is the youngest city in Foundria at nearly 100 years and is the only city which is within the remaining forest. Because of its location, Nearwood is used as the island's largest tree cutting and wood processing city. Due to the city's location nearly 50 miles inland it has to import massive amounts of metal and purified water regularly as it has no direct access to the shore.
Since the nearest city is almost 20 miles away, with half of the distance covered by forest, Nearwood is quite isolated compared to the rest of the island.
Other than exporting processed wood, Nearwood also has a strong source of income in the form of stables and inns for horse carriages and their drivers. Since the road to Nearwood is so long, nearly every carriage driver to the city has to stay over night as their horses are too exhausted for the long return trip. This has lead to more and more extrotionate prices for inns and stables in Nearwood over the century of the city's history.
Because of it's isolation, Nearwood has to handle its excess tar locally, dumping it all into an area north of the city in a deforested spot..
Nearwood was the first city to make use of the tar which is a natural byproduct of the burning of wood. They use it to turn the ground to road for the carriages and to help fortity houses.
Over the centuries there have been occasional whisperings of smokey men walking the streets of Nearwood or the nearby forest. Some locals claim that this is a dangerous spirit stalking the city and taking victims. Others say that it's just a normal person seen through the smog, which is especially thick in and around Nearwood due to the local wood processing plants.
