Session 032: Pumpkin Patch

General Summary

North Wind arrives at the Oasis of the Muda for a much needed rest. The day that follows is relatively uneventful. The group finds lodging at the Hunker Down hostel. Pumpkin the Part Time seems to be utterly apathetic towards the group's presence in their workplace. Talasea and Zenith venture into the oasis (in spite of the signs that warn against going beyond the sectioned off wading area) and are tempted to explore the mysterious pit at the bottom. Ultimately they decide not to give into the mysterious pull that draws them in. They see Pumpkin with their orcish dad, Maka, at the boardwalk, noting their matching purple hair, and ask about it, but don't receive many useful answers.
Stopping by the visitor center, the crew notices a series of circles noted on the map and wander over to visit the Untide Pools, a cluster of small pools on the ground. The old woman who keeps them, Sarina the Caretaker, is not particularly into the idea of the crew checking the pools out, but explains that they are of ritualistic usage for the people of the Muda. She explains her reluctance by citing the Winterian scholars that came though and wanted to take measurements of things all over town, and the Untide Pools in particular.
Sarina also seems to gaze at Mohr with a particular look in her eye. Pumpkin is not particularly helpful in clarifying why their grandmother would do such a thing.
The crew returns to the Untide Pools in the morning to speak with Sarina again. They ask her about the strange occurrences they've noticed and she asks if they are speaking of the Cracks of Creation. Sarina tells them of a Mudan creation story that the world was pieced together from pieces of other worlds and the First created the four dieties to keep them together. But sometimes, cracks between the pieces grow a bit too wide. Sarina seems surprised that the group isn't familiar with the story and Zenith remembers a book on obscure creation myths that had a section on stories that feature pieces coming together and giving birth to other things.
Sarina is also surprised that folks aren't talking about how the Cracks are getting worse.
But of course, the pit at the bottom of the oasis is simply a tunnel to the center of the world and its ebb and flow is the breathing of the Summer Goddess. What do you mean there's magma down there, she asks Jack. That's ridiculous.
Zenith spends some time quietly serving at a temple to the Summer Goddess.
Finally, the North Wind decides to head out on a detour from their path. They agree to follow the pull in Zenith's center that guides them northward. They are momentarily waylaid by a sandstorm, but twin castings of Tiny Hut keep them and their safe through the sand and the roar and the card games.
Past storms and sands and sleep, North Wind tops the rise of a sand dune to discover and Zenith knows in his core: he has arrived at the site his Goddess has asked him to find.
What he doesn't know is what he will do about the tower of ice too cold, too jagged, too bright to look at in the heat of a desert sunset that rises in front of them.
