Session 036: Surprise Visits

General Summary

We begin with North Wind preparing for bed. They take a moment to leave their nightly voicemails before going to bed.
Temperance tells Talasea about the gift exchange they're doing aboard the ship. Thomas tells Jack about a song that Abby wrote. Verity is distracted and out of breath when Zenith Sends, but doubles down on the frantic "I love you" that he throws out at the end of his message. A flustered Zenith says it back.
The next morning, the group has their spa treatments, enjoying mimosas, coffee, massages, and mani-pedis. They all get coordinating nail art, complete with compass roses on their thumbs. Afterwards they spend some time in the hot springs.
Later that day, the group heads to the Stairsteps, a section of town known for the colorful houses that line the streets and the climbing, sometimes literally stair-stepped structure of the neighborhood. They find the house Barnaby had described to them, with blue walls and a large telescope on the roof.
The person that answers the door is shocked nearly speechless. Jack vaguely recognizes the person as looking similar to him and the heterochromatic eyes remind him of one of his siblings. Amelia explains that she is indeed that sibling; she was once known as Matthew and has since transitioned. The two embrace. Then Amelia hastily asks if Jack is okay. She had been looking for him for a long time, but had been extra concerned since she saw the wanted posters. She ushers everyone inside, nervous on their behalf and eager to hear why she has seen wanted posters for each and every one of them.
Inside, Amelia introduces them to Lydia, her small daughter. The toddler hides behind her mother's legs but waves at her Uncle Jack when prompted.
Then, Amelia retrieves a stack of wanted posters that illustrate each of their faces. There are two different posters for Jack, the first of which offers a reward of 100gp. The second is the same as everyone else's: it offers a 500gp reward to be captured alive.
"Wanted in connection to the deaths of Olai Thonemany and Oswin Shoreditch"
The group instantly and perfectly recall the events of the Trial of Ivaran, how they had made an agreement with the Grit and the Grind to kill Duan and Olai, ensuring no one left the encounter alive so that each faction would believe the other side to be the culprit. They also recall how they did the killing Duan bit, then allowed Olai and the Ringed Roses to pursue the other Raywalkers as they were escaping and kinda just bounced. They had done a Sending to Oswin a few days after leaving Ivaran and he had been fine at the time.
The group assures Amelia that they didn't kill those two people. The conversation turns to why they came if they weren't specifically looking for Jack's kin. They explain that they are looking into Freyre's safety. Amelia tries to play it off, saying that Freyre is fine, the drinking is a whole different thing, but they aren't involved in anything criminal. However, once Barnaby and Misha arrive as they said they would, it doesn't take much pressing for Amelia to admit the truth: Freyre is a member of the Qu Guard and frequently goes undercover. It's true this time they've been gone a little long, and Amelia has no clue why a message would be delivered to the kids at their workplace, but she has already notified Freyre's handler of the note and urges the group to let things lie.
Amelia tries to dissuade the group from investigating in case they get caught or interfere with the investigation, but they are not at all dissuaded. So she tells them what she knows in order to help, though it isn't much since she isn't supposed to know anything at all. A crew had rolled into town planning to do something a little bit disastrous, though not connected to raywalkers? maybe to a merchant family? Freyre was going into the blooming caverns to investigate. Also maybe some sort of smuggling situation that has something to do with it. Idk.
The North Wind heads out to get their belongings from the Hot™ Springs Resort. On the way, they do a Sending to Sathi of the Grit and the Grind. Sathi says they're glad to hear they're good when Oswin is dead. So that's definitely totally all fine and good and there is no peril in the party's next steps whatsoever....
