Other Shapes

by hughpierre

Summary

Reality twists around this thing. Based on stories, they bring madness, warp perceptions and indict delusions. One man even thought he was king of the Four Corners.   They are also notoriously beautiful, yet living in personality-destroying impressions. They are madness. They are art. They do not obey the normal laws of perspective. If you see them at a distance, then they are also up close.

Historical Basis

Strange Objects

Structural geometries, simple and flexible enough for a witch and a child to understand equally. But paradoxically impossible to describe to others. Each shape is apparently three dimensional and float in a fixed position, unmoving yet still in motion, scattered along the summits. While they are considered indescribable, the occasional ice men who attempt to find the phenomenon, have given them agreed-upon names that supposedly describe the area where they reside, if not the shapes themselves.
It is fitting that much of these names don't describe much of anything. There is triple sphere, schism, axiom and shawcross. Some others are called anti-prism, flat cube, duo and the monster. For want of still ascribing meaning to the word: shape.

Spread

There are few, if any, stories about the other shapes that have gone past the ice valley.

Variations & Mutation

Cultish Devotion

The grandmother truly loves her grandson, but her worship leads her to do terrible terrible things. Her madness does not actually cause her to lose control. But, instead, more capable of performing her awful lords will.
There is supposedly a palette sign capable of connecting directly with the shapes. Tatters trail and connect with every other shape with every devotee. Wearing it might even transform you bodily into a bubbly undead.

Devil's Trade

It is said that when their names are spoken they can appear just above the horizon. Because it is already there. For this degree of 'certainty', some fools venture to the snow capped summits to barther for resilience, talents or greater wisdom in exchange for their soul.

Coldness

The summits of Hananhallpa are well-believed to have been the origin of the much admired Kang. But it is also one of the coldest places in the world. One has to wonder how such a great people got their start in such a place. Many in the rest of the highlands and lowlands do you not think very critically about it, but Third Quadrant citizens theorize that perhaps the shapes had altered the weather in some negative way.

Cultural Reception

One ice tribesman who coincidentally witnessed the rainbow movements on the Fairy House commented on an apparent similarity between it and stories of his grandparents.
Just picture this tiny web of corruption.

Disappearances

If someone ever vanishes from either their beds or from the mountains, blame is culturally attributed to the shapes.

Appearances

Conversely, they are also blamed when complete strangers show up climbing down the mountain in entirely inappropriate clothing for the icy conditions.

In Art

Adventurous creatives journey to the other shapes seeking inspiration through the insane artistry. Though the works these artists derive do not appear to be so worthy as to be called mind altering, as the shapes are described. Though they are superb.
