Dwarfism

Dwarfism is a physical condition characterized by significantly shorter stature than is typical of average height. Those affected may stand as short as one meter or less in adulthood. The condition manifests itself in the womb, and is noticed immediately upon birth. It affects both men and women, and is hereditary. A person suffering from dwarfism is called a Dwarf.

Children of two dwarven parents, known as gnomes, tend to be even shorter on average. They almost always suffer severe health issues through what is likely a short life. Dwarven procreation is therefore illegal in many countries.

Symptoms

Key symptoms of dwarfism involve stunted growth from birth, resulting in a shorter stature that falls significantly below the average for the individual's age and gender. Dwarves often develop smaller limbs and body frame compared to a normal humans. Relatively, their heads are large, making up one fifth to one-quarter of their total body length. It is not uncommon that one or more of the person's internal organs grows to a normal size, leading to bloated spots on the body. This can be both painful and dangerous, causing fractures and internal bruising. Organ failure from excessive internal pressure is the leading cause of death for dwarves.

Physical maturity in dwarves aligns with their chronological age. However, their voices tend to remain high-pitched even after puberty, and most sound younger than their actual age. Dwarves are fully capable of reproducing, although pregnancies can be challenging due to their small stature.

Dwarves have a lower body temperature compared to average humans. They usually prefer warmer climates, and colder environments can impose serious health risks.

Treatment

Currently, there is no known cure for dwarfism. Any attempts to accelerate growth or alter the dwarf's natural proportions have proven to be unsuccessful and often harmful.
