the Livid Waste

Lost to the City

Not much is  known of the City of the One Prince's origin and expansion.
It is a fact that everyone's ancestors fell down the Well and landed here at one point or another, but not much is known on how the Prince built his city from the rubbles of the ancient ruins littering the wastelands that is the Dome.
Though in more recent times, a border district in the extreme northern reaches of the City has an interesting history.
The Livid Wastes are by far the latest part of the city reclaimed from the Wastes, and its story is  a testament to the resilience and endurance of its mainly orcish citizenry.

Two centuries ago the walls of the city stopped just a few miles behind Blind Alley. At that time, the Livid Wastes were a series of tall crumbling grand marble buildings neatly organised in rows along well-organised paved streets.
What made the Livid Waste particular is that the ground floor and first floor of the tall buildings were still standing and could provide shelter and rooms to live in.

Although the wastes were a dangerous mix of falling architectures and prowling predators, they soon become a favourite haunts of the City's Retrievers as they offered not only pillageable resources but partial shelter in the vast wilderness of the Wastes.
Soon, the City's undesirables found an unscertain refuge in the buildings' marble halls and set out to build themselves a new community outwith the City(s Walls.

After a century, the settlement was well established and was growing under its own steam. Life was harsh in the Wastes but through careful management of its borders possible.
The Prince's Sun, if not as powerful, still reached most of the streets in the district. Orcs and other humanoids who were less affected from the lack of sunlight were particularly successful in establishing small communities in the Waste.

Found and Reclaimed by the City

The community developped over the last century, on the model of a barter system.
The population traded the precious resources they found in the surrounding Desolation Belt with the City's merchants and retrievers and in exchange got produces they could not grow themselves being so far away from the Lakes.

The Livid Wastes communities might have continued to thrive under this model for many more years if not for the greed and ambition of one Orc and his tribe.

Borug Meltiron thought his tribe strong and clever enough to start raiding the City's outlying farming and fishing districts.
After the first two raids on the Blackport fishing district, which took the population by surprise, and was moderately successful, the attacks provoked the One Prince's ire.

The Prince's justice was swift - the Knights of the Shield were sent out into the Livid Wastes for a punitive expedition.
Within a week and much bloodshed, the Wastes had been tamed and now belonged to the City under the One Prince's governance.

New City Walls were quickly erected following one of the Waste's suitable large street and within a year, a high tower, called the Northern or Livid Tower, was built not far from where Meltiron met his end.

The survivors were able to continue with their lives, but had now to bow to the Prince and follow the Princes' Laws.
This happened fifty years ago, and the district still has a very bad reputation. There are still places within the Livid District that are considered no man's land by the citizenry.           Culture and Traditions
