Otto the First, German successor of Charlemagne, founds the Holy Roman Empire. Now, Christianity is deeply entrenched in Europe, and the time of revenge is afoot.

The wizards. The sorcerers. The druids. Sometimes even the bards, though in their case political reasons were more usual to be the cause of death. The magic users faced difficult times when the Holy Roman Empire was established. The political union which in time has become too decentralized for its own good has acquired a tradition that united them until the end of the empire itself. Persecuting spellcasters of all sorts except for clerics and paladins. In other areas, where the Roman Church was less zealous, or in the Orthodox East the spellcasters were allowed to live. One can't call it normal life, though. The spellcasters were either forced to live in reservations or contained spaces where they could be controlled and later when the Crusades came around, they were made to conscript into the Holy Orders. There were several periods when the church prohibited any transfer of knowledge about magic, just to lift this restriction later. This was the vengeance of the Christians persecuted by the mages in the Roman Empire. The devout have become sure that God hates magic.

Как только начались Крестовые Походы - от них попробовали избавиться, насильно записав их в религиозные ордена. Несколько раз Церковь запрещала передавать магические знания, несколько раз она снимала это ограничение. Это была месть христиан, коих мучали римские маги. Верующие абсолютно точно "знали" - их Бог ненавидит магию.
