The Pools of Consciousness
The Pools of Consciousness…
That is a difficult topic my dearest Ronove. However not because of any inhibition of speaking of my own origins, but because I truly do not know much about the Pools as I’d like, or you might expect. In my youth, I did study the Pools. I was fascinated by these swirling vapors of consciousness that created myself and thousands others before and after. My study of the Pools is what filled my empty time before my beloved Fassedus Sarefaysus came along.
Yet, I know next to nothing of noteworthiness.
The earliest memories of all beings are of the Pools, no matter how faint all will know of them. I would best describe it as sleeping. That is taken from what I understand of how you might experience sleep. Semi-consciousness. That is exactly what all are in the beginning.
We ferment for millennia. Longer than this universe has existed and much longer until after it has passed. That is how long it has taken for an entity such as I to come into existence. However, every being may take as much time as it desires. Nothing is to be rushed. Nor can it be.
The Pools themselves, I believe, lie in the center of that plane of existence, but I could not tell you why. It feels as instinct, as bizarre at it may seem. As I have mentioned before, this realm is endless. You could walk your lifetime and never reach its end. The Minders watch over the Pools and in some sense are spiritual creatures. They guided all in the way they need to be. The Minders are the first and the last to exist. It may be difficult to fathom, but I am a being closer to the end than the beginning.
The creatures that may emerge from the Pools come in all varieties. There are those like Fassedus and I, who come in pairs, albeit we emerged at different time. I estimate, give or take, a century between us. Some even come in larger pairs, but more than two is extremely rare.
Any creature that emerges from the Pools, may return and create a new being. They cease to exist, but not in memory.
Any entity that emerges from the Pools is complete. They do not change like mortals do, that is physically. Only some fracture of the self would urge one to change since the physical entity and the mind are the same. This is why we have our veils. The thin masks we wear, but so do all beings in some form.
The Minders have their mantra, “The Pools have always been, always will be.” Yet, even their memories have limits as well. There has always been something before us, the Pools, dimensions beyond whence I came, and perhaps beyond that. Even at the end of this Universe there are more stars.
Found in a nondescript corner of the Fringe Athenaeum upon a table of solid crystal, this letter does not stand out among the hundreds of other loose papers scattered on the table. At first glance, it appears to be sharp an exaggerated scribbles, however they shift upon a closer inspection into something recognizable.
