Altenen has changed greatly over the eons, changing from a monster visage to the more regal one that most remember him by. Only other celestial truly knew his original form

Special abilities

As a creature that originated from the Deep Ethereal, dream magic came naturally to him. While he was one of the original practitioners of the Nightmare spell, he had also created its counterpart in his later years, and gifted this ability to his Angels so they can improve the lives of mortals

Personal history

Altenen started his existence within the Deep Ethereal. A creature born of the despair and the anxieties of others, a living nightmare. He spent centuries plaguing those who slept too deeply, until the experiments of a wizard went awry and he escaped into the Prime Material Plane, where he killed his summoner and terrorized ancient Mercy for millienia. It wasn't until the war between Vaal and Mercy had broken out that Altenen had any thoughts other than causing pain. Suffering had suddenly become abundant across the whole world thanks to the Shattered God, and not only did Altenen grow to be bored by suffering, but even despise it. He started destroying Vaal encampments, sickened with the new state of the world and angry with those that turned his pastime into a common occurence. As he did this, people began to recognize him as a creature of good and believed he was doing this to genuinely help, and at first, this was not his intention, but as the people he helped began to praise him more for his actions, he found it more comforting than he ever did their pleas for mercy. He began to help, not to simply get out his frustrations, but to earnestly help those who had no other hope. By the end of the war he was recognized as a creature of benevolence and most had even forgotten his origin, believing him to be some fae creature, and devoted their worship to the being that saved there lives.
During the centuries after, he had risen to Godhood through worship becoming the God of Hope, and was routinely worshipped by adventurers, hoping to find great treasure, and he would sometimes be able to answer these calls, slowly incorporating the portfolio of Jewels into his being

Over the years Altenen has become patient and intelligent. A careful planner and wise being, Altenen is always willing to give advice or tips to those that ask him for it

Altenen shares his true origins with his Angels to prove that anyone is capable of change, even those made of dark thoughts have the potential to inspire hope and change for the better
