Zone 3
Zone 3 is the middle Zone of 5 Zones, within the city of Birdencaster [Image in the Sidebar]. Zone 3 is known as the High Industrial Zone. High Industrial those industries that require a small amount of space such as factories and workshops. Zone 3 is nested between Zone 2 and Zone 4.
People
Residents
People who live here generally work in the factories and workshops, there are a few offices that perform certain services such as Funeral Directors and Bookkeepers. People tend to be slightly poorer than everyone else in the sense of savings accounts tend to be lower and other people from other zones. While clothes are made at an industrial level these people will wear clothes longer than others, as they can’t afford new clothing. As a result, clothing worn by these people tends to be more faded than others. People live above business in apartments but they are unlikely to be the shopkeeper or the owner of the business below.Visitors
Visitors to the Zone tend to walk through this Zone unless they are meeting someone. It is known as the most polluted Zone in Birdencaster due to the number of factories in the Zone. its gardens and squares, however, are well worth a visit as do the residences and workers on breaks from their workplaces.Places
As with Zones, they have an industry which society needs to function this is not a hard and fast rule as there are a Hardware Store and Bookkeepers in 3 4. Which are alongside Silverton Square. Another notable square is found 3 5, called Inspiration Square. This square has a sculpture of a person knitting while at the other end of the scarf, a person is unravelling it into a ball. Which the first person is using to knit the scarf, in an endless loop. Below is a table of industries in the Zone along with which segment they can be found in and with further information on the product produced.Sector or Industry or Item | The Segment that it
can be found in |

Banking | ||
Mint | 5 | Coins are Minted in the mint. Coins are made out of Nickel which is imported in, as the City of Birdencaster is not near an ore rich mountain. The Nickel coins are larger than the coins in circulation currently in the UK. This is to ensure that they don’t get lost as quickly. All Coins differ in size as they go up in denominations. The size increases as the denomination does. The denominations of the coins are 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 250 New Sovereigns. Banknotes are non-existent to save resources.

Waterworks | 11 | The Waterworks ensures that Birdencaster gets its water supply to all of its buildings. The Waterworks also works with what is dumped into the sewers. The plumbing and pipes for water are underground and in tunnels to make the pipes accessible. There are chambers and in the underground tunnels holds storage for replacement pipes and other fixtures, in other chambers, are water treatment areas, to make it safer to those who work there as methane can release in the water treatment process the gasses are funnelled to a safe distance outside of the city limits. |
Engineering | ||
Precision instruments | 8 | Precision instruments, means analogue tools which measure items or areas, these tools are vernier callipers, tape measures and rulers. These tools are made of metal. The metal, which is aluminium which is highly recyclable. Since archetypes are needed to ensure that the measurements are accurate [T12] the archetypes are kept in each City Halls across the country.

Abattoir | 3 | An abattoir or slaughterhouse is where animals are taken to be slaughtered a portion of the meat is taken to the butchers. The other portion is taken to the canning plant to be canned for exportation. Also, this is where other animal products are refined and made. |
Breweries | Various | Breweries are generally reliably productive. They are expected to produce at least 1.2 kilolitres of Beer, Cider, Ale and Mead. If these levels drop below this then more of the Alcoholic beverage is imported. Breweries run every year, with allowances being made for whiskey and other alcohols which need to be aged.

Confectioners | Various | At the Confectioners, sugar confections are produced as time has passed and transportation of ingredients is a much riskier affair as ingredients are transported by ship allowing them to be a target for pirates. As this is the case these ingredients are rare. As a result, confections are not made from containing coconut or chocolate.
For more information on confections, take a look at the Zone 4 article. |
Dairy | 2 | This is where the milk that cows produced is pasteurised and can be turned into cheese. |
Distilleries | Various | Distilleries are generally reliably productive and are expected to produce at least 1.3 kilolitres of whisky and 1 kilolitre of Liqueurs. If these levels drop below this then more of the Alcoholic beverage is imported. Distilleries and breweries run on a yearly basis, with allowances being made for whiskey and other alcohols which need to be aged. |
Drinks | 7 | Unlike in drink factories in the Old World that would produce bottled drinks, these drinks are a combination of powdered chemicals that are measured into sealed sachets [T10] or containers [T11] that we would be recognised as the container that holds hot chocolate powder in the Old World. These sachets or powder can be added to a measured amount of water to make the desired drink. The powering idea came about to save on plastic waste. |

Mechanical Machine Factory | 12 | Mechanical Machine Factory is where mechanical machines are made. The machines that are notable are a coin sorter and a dry ingredient measurer.
Coin Sorter As you would expect a coin sorter sorts coins, and is hand-cranked. While the electric versions of today have a digital counter and a hopper for the coins to be inserted. This is true for the coin sorter to have a hopper but there is an extra thumb lever that allows the continuation of mechanically counting the coins, that holds tightly when released resets the number back to zeros. Since the currency base is the whole number only and is the same as counting. There are no decimal places that need to be displayed. So the coin sorter counts from 0 to 99995. The number ends in a five as there are no coins worth less than 5 New Sovereigns. The coins that are counted are put into their own tubes, which can be taken out and made into further amounts or put back. Coin sorters are used by banks. This is because of the size and therefore the cost of owning one and also the number of coins a person has on them or would want to count and sort would not elicit them needing a coin sorter in the first place. Dry Ingredient Measurer A Dry Ingredient Measurer is a machine that measures out amounts of dry ingredients in metric amounts. The machine works similarly to the coin sorter in its input. Dry ingredients are deposited in the hopper on top of the machine. A handle is cranked, and a conveyor carries a cup within the device which picks up the measured amount and dumps it into a bowl under the device. If there is no cup there is a brass metal plate preventing the ingredients from falling through the machine. The cups themselves are also brass. The cups and the metal plating for the gaps come in kits so there will be a kit of parts so that the machine can measure different amounts the smallest is 25g while the largest can be 1 kilogram. The metal plates also change sizes so that for obvious reasons that the ingredients do not fall through the machine. The machine is majoritively used in successful bakeries as it would be too expensive to be run domestically or in small bakeries. |
Manufacturing and Processing
Bike Factory | Various | The bike factory produces bikes for the Cycle Rickshaw industry and for personal use. They also produce parts for bikes and pumps for maintenance and repairs. It is understood that if citizens return broken items that cannot be replaced to the factory that the factory can give coupons as a form of thanks. These coupons can be used in cycle stores in Zone 4, as a discount to get replacement items. These coupons are often saved for these purchases or as part of a gift. That would be appreciated by the recipient rather than the giver. |
Blacksmiths | Various | Blacksmiths are metalsmiths that specialise in forging or working with steel to make and repair tools as well as making agriculture tools such as pitchforks to move hay for farm animals in Zone 5. The bands that go on the barrels as well as gates and fences for squares, gardens and homes. They will also produce ironmongery items.

Brownsmiths | Various | Brownsmith is a metalsmith that specialises in using bronze and brass. What makes a Brownsmith a Brownsmith instead of a Redsmith, as there has been confusion, is the use of brass as well as copper whereas the Redsmith only uses copper. A brownsmith makes and repairs penannular brooches. These are used as part of the Messenger uniform. Brownsmiths also repairs some of the brass parts that are used in mechanical machines. |
Cooper | Various | Coopers make barrels for the distillery since the city has a forestry industry the wood that comes from the forest is made into barrels. The steel used to make the bands around the barrel are imported. It is the Blacksmith that makes the bands ready for the barrel making process.

Gunsmith | Various | Gunsmiths make rifles and ammunition for the armed forces. The butt of the rifle is made out of wood as it is an easier material to shape than metal. Any of the working parts of the rifle are of course made out of metal for the purposes of reducing wear as well as to absorb heat and from the explosion of the bullet. A form of identification has to be shown among other identification papers before the gunsmith will be happy to sell rifles to the customer. It is understood that the customer is going to use the rifle while on service for his city or country, not as a way of terrorising others. For More Information Click Here |
Redsmith | Various | Redsmiths are metalsmiths that specialise in working with Copper only if they were to work with brass as well they would be called a Brownsmith. Redsmith creates all sorts of items of different sizes. At the smaller end, they can make board game pieces all the way up to stills for the distilleries and fermenting chambers for breweries.
For more information on the Redsmith, take a look at the Redsmith article. |
Platers | 4 | Platers refer to the process of metal plating. Platers, metal plater some copper items from the Redsmiths. Platers and the sawmills in Zone 5 that does not initially follow the Warehouse system as the Warehouse is like the middle man between transportation between production or commercial buildings. If it were to follow the system it would get items to plate from a Warehouse, which was originally produced at the Redsmiths. Once the item is plated they would be returned to the Warehouse and then withdrawn by a shopkeeper.
What actually happens is, the copper item is made at Redsmiths and then delivered to the platers if it needs plating then gets delivered to a Warehouse. For More Information Click Here |
Carpenter | 9 | Carpenters produce furniture as well as front doors and general doors. They use the pre-cut wood from Warehouses. These boards and posts are then cut or have slots cut to make the item of furniture. Doors are made by slotting planks together. The planks are chiselled to make a pattern of door and the plans are then put together to make the door.

Glassworks | 9 | At the Glassworks, glass is made since there is some lack of knowledge with the glass making process due to The Great Rewind, glass making is a lot more primitive. This means that optically clear glass is difficult to make, and therefore the non-optical glass is made in this factory the glass is to make windows and mirrors. A small amount of glass can be produced to make imperfect lenses if the accuracy of the light does not matter.

Chemical | 10 | The Chemical Plant processes chemicals mainly from what is left from the distilling process as it is the ethanol that is drawn off during the distillation processes. It is the chemicals that remain that are processed as well as from failed batches of the whiskey and gin-making process. These chemicals can then be used in other products. The notable chemicals are below.
Methanol[T4][T4A] acetic acid, Antifreeze, inks, resins, adhesives, and dyes. Chemistry Of Whiskey[T3] Ethyl Acetate[T5][T5A] paints, varnishes, lacquers, cleaning mixtures, and perfumes. Paraformaldehyde[T6] binding material for particleboard, medium-density fiberboard and plywood. Isoamyl Acetate[T7] Varnishes and metal or wood lacquers. Chemistry Of Gin[T8] Acetone[T9] Cleaning Tools, to make paint and varnishes, degreaser, a primer before soldering. The Chemical Plant also creates poisons this is however done in another part of the plant as to not add harmful chemicals to those that might be intended for consumption. Employees that work with pistons go through rigorous progress of changing uniforms and hygiene procedures to go into an area that is not producing poisons. These uniforms are not taken into areas where food is eaten so they can’t accidentally poison themselves. Most areas are segregated by what the area makes. Candle Factory | 11 | The Candle factory produces candles of two types: pillar and tapered candles [T13]. The pillar candles are made by mould with a spike in the middle to allow a wick to be put in the middle. For tapered candles, they use the dip method to make the candle with this method the wick is already a part of the candle. The Candle Factory also makes Matches. |
Canning plant | 11 | At the Canning Plant meat is canned. The meat comes from the Animal Husbandry Industry. The Canning plant also produces empty cans for use in other cities as with the markets in Zone 4, food that comes from other cities that will not make it in transportation will be canned so fruit and vegetables are canned for freshness. In Birdencaster itself, the citizens enjoy fresh meat as the product is much more local so do not eat the canned variety. |
Clockmaker | 12 | The Clockmaker makes clocks from tabletop clocks as well the larger ones that can be found in squares or on buildings. As a team they make gears and the necessary parts to make the clocks for the larger ones. They work as a team on a single gear and work methodically to finish the finished product. They also produce replacement hands big and small as well as decorations to the clock face. For More Information Click Here |

Metal Mill | 8 | The Metal Mill is where all metals are recycled and refined to make items such as rails for the rail industry, sheeting for the rolling stock industry and other mediums of metal such as sheeting or round rods.
|
Textiles | ||
Clothing | 3 | At the Clothing Factory, they produce clothes but also footwear. While they do produce clothes for casual use, they specialise in making uniforms and accessories for uniforms. This includes tool belts, boilersuits as well as Steel Capped Boots. |
Transport and Logistics
Rolling Stock | 8 | In the rolling stock factory rolling stock is locomotives, carriages, as well as any rolling stock that can carry freight. The rolling stock that is for freight can be for logs, shipping containers and mail carriages. Since the factory is in Zone 3 but the Railway system is in Zone 5 there are rails that run from the two Zones. Typically celebrations from 3 10 to Zone 5 are carried out; these tend to be of cheering people. For when the rolling stock is going through Zone 4, there are gates that are shut so that the rolling stock can be moved through the Zone it is understood that there shouldn't be people standing there or goods in crates in the gangway or even markets there so that the stock can get through the Zone. Once it gets its way through to Zone 5 then the rolled on to an end of a train to be used or loaded onto a train for its life of transportation.

Things
The main oddity of the Zone is that in Segment 8 where there is a rolling stock factory. The road is wider to allow the stock to travel down the rails towards Zone 5 to roll on to the National Network. During the process of transporting it, people will stand and watch and some may cheer. As with the emergency service in Zone 4, the market gates will be closed so that the rolling stock can be moved through the Zone.Article Contents
