Weurmut

A familiar sweet smell wafts from the hearth and fills the small tavern. The slowly warming patrons of the small establishment eagerly await its contents having just come in from the biting cold of an Aldegian winter.   "Is it ready yet miss?" asks one of the patrons.   She smiles, "Should be ready at any moment," she stands and walks over the to fire, carefully checking the contents of two pots. Carefully she lifts and carries and carries both of the pots to the bar. She pours each of the pots steaming contents into a large ceramic bowl. Moments later a long line of giddy customers forms in front of the bowl.   She dutifully ladles each customer a portion of her homemade Weurmut, a popular seasonal Aldegian drink. The bowl quickly empties and her now happy customers sit with their friends and family and toast to a fair and safe winter. The barmaid smiles again, knowing she will have to prepare a second serving right away.

Ingredients

A common list of ingredients for Weurmut can be found below. These ingredients can and commonly do change depending on a family recipe or whether an ingredient is in season or is available.
  • 1 bottle of bold dry red wine
  • 1/2 cup of brandy or other available alcohol
  • 1 cup water
  • 6 allspice berries
  • 2 cinnamon stick
  • 2-star anise pods
  • 1 large orange (If available)
  • 6 small apples
  • 1 cup whole, unrefined sugar
  • 6-8 whole cloves
  • 1 nutmeg, about 10 gratings

Manufacturing process

First, you will need to take a sharp knife or spoon and cut small holes in the tops of your apples. Fill these holes with your sugar or whatever sweetener you have available. Then take your whole cloves and insert them into your orange, if orange is unavailable any other citrus fruit, dried or fresh, will do.   Place these in your first of two copper pots and place over the fire, covering and left to cook for 30 - 40 minutes or until apples are soft. Do not let your apples go too soft though because they will turn to mush when ingredients are combined.   Take your second copper pot, pour in your wine, brandy, and water and place over heat. In a small fine cloth pouch place in your allspice berries, cinnamon sticks, and star anise pods and tie shut with string. Place pouch into warmed liquid and let simmer for 20 minutes or until apples are done. Don't let it boil though, you don't want to burn off too much of the alcohol. Remove the spice bag.   Take a large stone or ceramic bowl and place your cooked apples and orange into the bowl. Then take your wine mixture and pour over top. Let flavours combine for about 5 minutes.   Ladle your completed Weurmut into traditional Leinkast glasses and grate nutmeg over top before serving.

Significance

Weurmut is a culturally significant drink as it is a staple beverage during the cold months of the Aldegian winter. Many families have sat around their fireplaces keeping warm with this firey and comforting drink in their hands.
*For this recipe, I used mulled wine and wassail recipes as my influence. The recipe found in this article is a combination of two of these recipes. It is an untested recipe, please try at your own risk. For those interested in an actual mulled wine or wassail recipe I will link to one of each here and herefor you.
