Gaelinar
On the universal level, the world of Gaelinar is not unlike other earth-like planets. Pierce the veil of clouds, however, and you'll find a land that is in the throes of a conflict that threatens the surrounding ethereal sea between the divine and the corporeal.
Gaelinar was seconds away from being shattered in half by the Sundering Sword of Kirin, Goddess of War at the apex of a battle between her and Mael, God of Life. The two came to blows over adding the recently-created gift of magic to the people below. Kirin believed it would empower humanity to prosper, while Mael believed it would only cause chaos.
Arguments escalated into pitched battles until, ultimately, the very skies darkened as gods and goddesses picked sides and warred with each other, pressganging souls of deceased humans into service. A race for numbers began on both sides, which eventually saw both Kirin and Mael harvesting lives from the planet itself to bolster numbers and break the stalemate.
The eternal war would have raged on above were it not for the discovery of Aetharium and the creations humanity would wring from its use. A combination of a crystalline mineral, metallurgy and steam technology, paired with the frustration and agony of humanity living beneath angry and jealous gods, caused the Piercing Spire to be constructed and a single, powerful shot to be fired into the sky which shattered Kirin's sword and caused the firmament to take notice.
All that stands between the growing power of Aetherium technology and celestial retaliation are the few who have been deemed worthy of the gift of magic and to be the scions of the gods.
