The Disapperance of the Dwarves
One day, almost as beforehand agreed, most of the dwarven mountain fortresses and cities across the world closed their mighty gates of stones to the surface within a month.
Only insignificant outposts and recently established cities remained open, who just as confused about this event, as the rest of the peoples who had previously traded or waged war with the dwarves.
Scouts and warriors from the open dwarven cities tried to enter the old fortresses, but all the side entrances had also been buried from the inside and every door bore the same warning in almost all the known languages: "We have come across something. We don't know what it is. Keep the gates closed." And so for 350 years the gates remained closed. The remaining dwarves guarded the gates and made sure that no one entered the old fortresses.
But after two generations, the warning seemed to had lost its effect. With most of their empire simply gone, power struggles flared up between the dwarves. One of the dwarven kings finally ordered a troop of his most capable warriors to uncover one of the old side entrances and search the fortress. Perhaps something could be found there that could restore order.
A single one of the warriors sent, returned from the fortress. Confused and traumatized, he spoke madness. He was brought before the king and his clerics so that they could examine the man. As soon as he entered the palace, however, he collapsed and died.
