The Plague of Stars
After a warrior had returned from one of the ancient and sealed dwarven strongholds, he died shortly afterwards. The clerics and advisors of the dwarven king were puzzled, as the man bore no injuries or signs of illness. The dwarf was burned with all his belongings and further expeditions to the fortress were punishable by death.
However, not a full month after the events, a mysterious illness spread through the king's court, claiming the lives of the king and his family before pouring out of the palace. As news of this deadly disease spread throughout the city, the city's merchants and travelers packed their belongings and fled, unaware that they were already infected and would soon spread the plague throughout Veström.
Within the next 200 years, the mysterious and deadly disease swept across the continent. At first only the dwarven cities were affected, but soon the plague reached the other races as well. Wherever it arrived, peasents, clergy and nobility alike were thrown at the mercy of the disease, which was known as the "Plague of Stars". The plague was named after the star-shaped patterns of hardened pus that would spread from the victims' bodies, shortly before killing them.
