Tiamats Return and the Second Dragonwars
The quarrel between the gods was exactly the opportunity Tiamat had patiently been waiting for. Together with her dragons, she returned from hiding to claim the world for herself.
Gods and mortals were at odds with each other, while her dragons had to obey her due to a magical covenant. She exploited this weakness of the mortal kingdoms. The only one who could stop her was Bahamut, who had lingered in the background of the gods all these years. He traveled the lands to find fighters and raise an army. Hardly any kingdom fully answered his call, as they themselves were embroiled in disputes with their neighbors. They were too blinded by personal rivalries and hatred to recognize Tiamat as the greater danger.
Thus Bahamut's army consisted almost entirely of volunteers. Together with this army of mortals and the dragons who were bound to his will, Bahamut faced Tiamat's army. Tiamat's forces were far superior to Bahamut's forces. But Bahamut had a plan. As battle raged, Bahamut and his mightiest warriors advanced towards Tiamat. In the midst of the battle, the dragons fought a fierce battle. Both were badly wounded when Bahamut cast a spell that would change the dragons forever.
With a powerful spell, he destroyed the covenant that bound the dragons to either Tiamat or him. With the breaking of the covenant, Tiamat's army crumbled as many of her dragons fled or turned against each other. Bahamut's army had suffered heavy losses, but the mortal volunteers and Bahamut's strongest dragons held firm and defeated Tiamat's forces.
Tiamat had to flee once again, but this time she was so severly wounded that she begged Asmodeus for help. If he would save her, she would help him fight the demons. The Lord of the Nine Hells accepted the offer and brought her to Avernus.
