History of the Ghelly Archipelago

The history of the Ghelly Archipelago dating from the arrival of Safeguard  to present day.

Initial Infrastructure

520 CE 400 CE

The time when Safeguard was first setting up and settling the archipelago. Safeguard attempted to control the region to establish efficient and fair nations and governments, but for unknown reasons, this failed and resulted in a large amount of death and suffering.    Safeguard resolved to never again attempt to rule or legislate over others, understanding that they were not meant for politics national leadership.

Safeguard Settles in the Ghelly Archipelago
    Discovery, Exploration

A group of 750 Intressian citizens arrived in the uninhabited Ghelly Archipelago. This was long before they were the powerful egalitarian organization they are today. Safeguard was more concerned with surviving in a new land than saving the world or protecting innocents. Many members of the Safeguard would settle the archipelago, creating provinces and kingdoms. Every individual in Ghelly is descended from a member of Safeguard.

The Cracked Era

400 CE 0 CE

Period of chaos and discord when the Ghelly Archipelago was broken up into a seemingly endless number of warring kingdoms and nations.   This time was marked as the golden age of warlords, criminals, and murderers as civilization was failing completely.

Arbora Techna Plants the Arbora Trees
    Cultural event

A woman by the name of Arbora Techna divined an alternative method by which druids could garner magical power. Rather than using the latent will of the biosphere to cast spells and rituals, Arbora learned to instead tap into the semi-divine semi-natural power of the moons.    She would become an inquisitive and strange figure in the Dran Steppe, planting strange trees and foliage and speaking with obscure entities. Nevertheless, a coven of druids would form around the trees she planted, forming the Mystics of the Moon who would define the culture of the Dran Steppe for centuries. Today, few have successfully deciphered all of Arbora's teachings except the archdruids of the three factions of the Mystics of the Moon.

    Oxymoronic Ode
    Celestial / Cosmic

The Oxymoronic Heroes fulfilled a prophecy known as the Oxymoronic Ode to revive Gain and Astra, the primordial Earth and Sun, and save life as we know it. Along the way, they fought many great enemies and made unlikely allies. Their accomplishments are still celebrated to this day across the Hapsid Sea and in the Ghelly Archipelago.

    The Shatter
    Disaster / Destruction

The bloodiest day in the history of the Ghelly Archipelago, the Shatter was an event in which the Ghelly Archipelago was split in two by an obscure monster going by the name Tipaina. What kind of creature Tipaina was is still unknown with various postulations by historical academics and conspiracy theories on online forums.    On this day, a strange blue creature, Tipaina, flew through the sky inciting violence and destruction, only to be met by the legendary Safeguard agent, Tyra McClain. The two fought, trading blows that launched each other across miles of terrain. The fight ended at Shattercrest in a location now known as Shatterpoint. Tyra mortally wounded Tipaina, but not before Tipaina could unleash the last of her power to send a beam of energy through the archipelago, taking hundreds of thousands of lives in the process.    This event also coincides with the drastic 99.99% reduction in the drow population across the world. How they are related is unknown, but it is unlikely to be a coincidence.

    Annexation of Dran Steppe
    Military action

Emane took away pieces of the Dran Steppe bit by bit, incorporating each of the disjointed kingdoms and nations into its novel union. The result of this conquest was the complete demilitarization of the Dran Steppe and the purposeful removal of almost all Dran Steppe cultures. Little record is known of what the Dran Steppe was like prior to this conquest.

    Annexation of the Arbora Gulf
    Military action

In between the frequent battles between Emane and the Oldrakes and civil unrest from the Dran Steppe, concessions were made between First Magister Alexandria and the Mystics of the Moons residing in the Arboran Gulf. The Arboran Gulf acquiesced to annexation with the Empire of Emane in exchange for regional autonomy. The Arboran Gulf would be under the laws of Emane, but the region itself had its own sets of rules and regulations as well and could request a revision of federal law. This method decreased Emane's need to micromanage the region and made the Arboran's much more accepting of Emane control, setting the precedent for future campaigns.

    Annexation of the Silent Coast
    Military action

The Silent Coast, a rocky shoreline area of rather weak nation-states, was open to Emane's conquests. Requesting only regional autonomy under the federal government, the Silent Coast looked to Emane for protection from the Oldrakes who for centuries had been raiding their homes, killing and enslaving their families, and dousing all possibility of hope.

    Annexation of the Oldrake Steppe
    Military action

After decades of fighting with the nation of dragons, the flames of the Oldrakes were put out with mountains up mountains of lead and gunpowder. Again, the people of Emane's new territory were elated by their freedom from the Oldrakes and the lair cities of the craggy steppe were easily assimilated into the Emane infrastructure.   This period also marks one of the most famous legends in Emane history, that of the Rhyder, a legendary figure who slew the last Grand Oldraks, Olvyr the Unyielding, and brought about the beginning of the end for this heinous nation. It is said the mountain upon which they fought still shakes with the power of their ferocity.

    Annexation of the Silaian Desert
    Military action

The conquest of the Silaian desert was primarily a conquest of areas on the periphery of the Silaian desert, as any tribes within the arid plain itself could easily be pacified with a thinly veiled threat. The coastal and mountainside cities were more well-defended, but their outdated military tactics allowed for efficient annexation of them individually. Conquest here continued the Arboran Precedent of regional autonomy under Emane supervision and authority.

    Founding of Gefyra
    Founding

Under the term of First Magister Cassandra Sebastionos the massive bridge of Gefyra was finally erected and the Trans Isle Highway connected the ten-mile wide Tipaina line that divides Quill Island in two. Apart from just the massive size of the bridge, more impressive is the stress under which the workers built it, with constant raids from the Southern nations roundabout supply routes. The purpose of the bridge would be to quickly and efficiently roll out personnel and weapons of war into the southern half of Quill Island.    Over time, the bridge would become a trade port and a city in and of itself, especially during the lifetime of Starria.

    Annexation of the Emeralta Plains
    Military action

Once the Gefyra Bridge was established and the supply route set, Emane expected an easy expansion into the Southern Quill Island, a month-long campaign at most. What Emane expected was a mass of treacherous squabbling kingdoms ready to stab each other in the back for a promise of power under their rule, but what they did not expect was a single, unified nation ready and waiting for their assault. The kingdom of Emeralta had unified almost every kingdom through Queen Bonifacio's diplomacy and King Emeralta's military power. The campaign lasted over a year and depleted much of Emane's resources but in the end, even the unity of Emeralta would be nothing against the power of Emane.   King Emeralta and Queen Bonifacio are still remembered today for their admirable efforts against Emane both in and out of the Emeralta Plains.

    Annexation of Berylka
    Military action

One of the more unusual conflicts in the history of Emane is the annexation of the region known as Berylka. The forests of Berylka are possibly a peek at what Quill Island looked like before the forests made way for progress. Expeditions into the forest were meant to be simple exercises to evaluate resources and establish relations with any inhabitants within. The forest was nearly completely uninhabited, but First Magister Mortus Albert still desired to notify them of their station in the nation of Emane.    Most troops who came back from Berylka came back shell-shocked and warped. They changed for the better and for the worse. The skirmishes started small, but gradually escalated in size and ferocity. Most records of the battles were left blank and the descriptions of the enemy were vague. The exact nature of the enemy the Emane soldiers faced is unknown, and few would ever talk of their experiences until they were on their deathbed. What reports there are seem to state the enemy was the forest itself, and the few inhabitants inside were harmless.  Suddenly, the fighting stopped and the Berylka was established as a nature preserve renamed the Magister's Arbor.

    Annexation of Salas
    Discovery, Exploration

Following the conquest of Berylka, Emane found itself with the entirety of Quill Island under its control and took some time to rest and bask in its accomplishments. Two years later, five days after the appointment of First Magister Xenia Gerelli, Golas began the conquest of the Oldrake Steppe. The greatest portion of Emane's troops was still stationed in the South as the Council neglected the city of Golas which had stood silently for so long. Golas quickly fortified their positions here and set to bringing the Oldrake Steppe into the fold.    Rather than deal with this predicament, the less strategy-minded First Magister Xenia looked to the outlying islands to drum up support. She made multiple expeditions to each of the various islands, including those in the Western Ghelly Archipelago. All that came of ten years of these expeditions was a small settlement on the barren rock of Salas, an island no one wanted. Luckily Golas was having difficulty keeping the Oldrakes down, which forced Golas to stall any plans to assault Emane in favor of taking back its own territory. The Oldrakes were free once more, from both Golas and Emane, but were still unwittingly serving the Empire in their own way.

Annexation of Northern and Southern Kinsla
    Military action

For over eighty years of relative stability as Emane reinforced rule in its provinces and closely monitored and participated in the switching of hands of the Oldrake Steppes. Rather than continue to sit on its laurels, Emane moved towards further expansion. With this came the new Emane National Navy that would come to represent the focus of Emane's expansion from this point forward.   Kinsla was too preoccupied with its own religious civil wars and Emane played each side against each other for the duration of the war, leading to something more akin to a detente than a conquest. Still, the two disparate halves of Kinsla were subsumed into Emane having wasted most of their resources instead of Emane. Emane recognized the two different halves of Kinsla, the indulgent North and utilitarian South, as separate provinces and allowed the free practice of their rival sects. Emane protected the two sides from persecution and did its best to avoid becoming seen as a common enemy.   North and South Kinsla now remain begrudging neighbors content under the rule of Emane and acts as the hub of high-class culture in the nation.

    Annexation of Willian
    Military action

Growing annoyed by Golas's presence in the Oldrake Steppe, Emane wished to design a situation in which they could better secure the area. The various towns of Willian had been neutral to both nations in the past, trading their crops for industrial goods. The mutual alliance Willian had with Golas and Emane was proving to be more troublesome with time, as Golas could station troops and resupply from there just as Emane could.    Emane set its economists to work making Willian economically dependent on Emane industry by selling them confidential agricultural practices, genetically modified seedlings, and services Golas could not provide. This led to Willian owing debt to Emane as the country made more and more demands of the tiny country. Eventually, the debt placed a strain on the economies of Willian and Emane offered to clear it in exchange for Willian's annexation. Most towns and settlements in Willian cooperated and agreed, with the remaining upstarts being pacified with minimal bloodshed.    Willian would go on to become the breadbasket of Emane until over farming and exploitation rendered it barren.

    Re-Annexation of Oldrake Steppes
    Military action

Emane moved back into the Oldrake Steppes from three sides and kicked Golas out. The inhabitants of the Oldrakes at this point were getting sick and tired of jumping around allegiances and barely listened to occupying forces as they strolled into town. Much of the populace saw Emane's presence as another shifting of hands had little faith in the new regime. The Oldrakes had no national identity and felt no allegiance to any power.

    Annexation of Crescent Island
    Military action

The pact kingdoms of Crescent Island were put down easily by the Emane National Navy. Though the warlocks that dominated the culture were quite skilled, many of the more ambitious among them saw an opportunity to rise in Emane society which made more open-minded kingdoms allies of Emane. The expert pact magic users of Emane and its allies effectively neutralized Crescent Island and Emane allowed its allies to rule over the island under Emane's supervision as per the Arbora Precedent.    The inclusion of the pact magic users of Crescent Island sparked an increased interest in interplanar studies and travel for a number of decades and reinforced warlocks as more legitimate manipulators. Emane began to make alliances with many interplanar beings and groups following this conflict.

    Golas Reacquires the Oldrakes
    Military action

The back and forth continues as the Oldrakes are again reacquired. The fighting is becoming more frequent as Emane and Golas place themselves as increasingly equal rivals.   The one major accomplishment is the founding of Fellhall, a city built in the style of Golas out of a cliffside where the Long Arm Peninsula begins. The city still stands today and is common ground for negotiations between the two nations even today.

Annexation of Velkettle and Oldrake Steppe
    Military action

Emane puzzled about how to permanently take the Oldrakes push Golas further from the doorstep of the Capitol. It was resolved that the only answer was to isolate Golas to its mountain fortress at the end of the Long Arm Peninsula. At the time, Golas had taken Velkettle and the Oldrake Steppes but could be setting its sights on Willian or the Silaian Desert as well. Taking the Silaian Desert would tank Emane's power supply. Emane sent spies and insurgents to Golas, Velkettle, and the Oldrakes. They gathered intelligence as usual, but now with a greater focus on the social weak points of Golas rather than military ones. This created a network of revolutionaries that would coordinate with the Emane military to undermine Golas's Empire.    Once Emane pushed into the Oldrakes, the whole region blew up in revolutions and counter-revolutions as citizens in Golas, Velkettle, and the Oldrakes were forced to decide allegiances in a warzone. Golas's military could not handle the strife occurring on both sides of their walls and had to give up its provinces before revolutionaries from Velkettle reached their fortress city.   One player of particular note was Ella Faria, an Emane spy who set most of the groundwork for the whole operation. Many of her missions are now recorded (and embellished) in classic literature.

    Annexation of Shattercrest
    Military action

The final of the outlying island to be brought into the fold, Shattercrest also turned out to be the most troublesome. The well-established and veteran National Navy spent decades attempting to garner every single advantage they could against the elvish island, but lost as much as they gained. Scouts would return with incorrect information if they returned at all and even the Mystics of the Moon seemed unable to prevent the Tipaina Sea from becoming enraptured in perilous storms. Many lines of communication, especially those that used magical infrastructure, were blocked once they were within ten miles of the island. Numerous invasions were made onto the island's coast and some forts were established, but at terrible costs and rarely for long. Councillors back in the Capitol were mysteriously dropping dead. The native population was still using stone tools, but their magic and control over the rainforest they resided in made the entire island a dreadnought.   To pierce through the island's defense, a new vehicle of war was created, the dreadjammer. The Dreadjammer ES Calliope, was the first and only ship of its kind, a flying ship that was a fusion of magic, science, and psionics capable of tremendous speed, high altitude, and devastating firepower. The ES Calliope split through the army's of Shattercrest and provided cover for reinforcements from the National Navy while also facilitating numerous ground invasions. The elves of Shattercrest were easily pacified in the coming months.    Due to the increased danger that Shattercrest culture posed to the safety of Emane in general, Shattercrest magics and customs were outlawed on the island against the Arbora Precedent and a much stronger hold was taken on the province.

    The Hateful March
    Disaster / Destruction

Two individuals on opposite sides of the Quill Island known as the Cambion and the Nephilim traveled across the country of Emane. They committed terrible acts that inspire fear and dread in Emane citizens and dark elation in many members of the Horrible Races. Their influence reignited negative sentiments against Horrible Races and birthed the modern Cults of the Cambion and Cult of the Nephilim.   The Nephilim worked in making gruesome examples of those they saw as sinful. They broke the wills and minds of individuals, degrading and executing them in public displays.    The Cambion was more furtive, trying to corrupt the youth culture of the southern Quill Island. He convinced people to abandon civility and inspired violence in many situations. He also unleashed the ARIV, a strain of virus that targets healers and ignores most magical defenses against it.   Both individuals were gunned down when they arrived at the center of Gefyra, where there now rests a monument to those that lost their lives to them.

The First Magister of Emane, Albain Tenorly, assembled all of the Councillors of Emane for an emergency meeting, only to slaughter them all and level the Capitol. This would result in the breakup of Emane as the provincial governments took over. The Capitol was rendered uninhabitable.
