Mosshaven
Government
As the capital of Mistfall, Mosshaven is home to its federal government. The federal government of Mistfall is made up of an elected council of twenty members who oversee matters of national importance. Positions are up for reelection every five years, and council members may run for up to five consecutive terms. The members of the council draft and pass laws, but receive guidance and approval from smaller committees with more specialized expertise. These smaller committees, which are the heads of specific departments, oversee specialized concerns and advise the head council on relevant matters. Committees are chosen from among members of each department based on skill and experience, and members of the committees serve for seven-year terms, at which point they may be re-elected once or vacate their seat for a new member. The general public trusts the decisions of the head council, and public opinion is usually fairly high. If a member of the council performs poorly or to the dissatisfaction of the citizens, they will not be re-elected, and so the council is held accountable.
Industry
Mistfall and Mosshaven are famous across Galactus for their timber industry, and by extension, the huge population of craftsmen that produce all manner of wood products. Mosshaven in particular is a hotspot for woodworkers, and produces a great amount of refined products. These range from sturdy wooden furniture like beds, chests, and chairs, to more intricate decorations like figures or carved panels. Woodworking is so ubiquitous in Mosshaven that every household is furnished by a friend or relative's handiwork that has been gifted to the homeowners.
Mosshaven is also renowned for its textile industry. Since the city's founding, artisans have been weaving blankets out of wool and dying them with tree barks and pine needles. The traditional techniques create intricate designs in thick woolen blankets, typically arrangements of geometric patterns in earthy tones of green, brown, and grey. As technologies have advanced, the availability of more dyes and different weaving patterns has introduced blankets with brighter colors and in more organic, rounded shapes, sometimes depicting whole scenes on tapestries that previously would have taken years of work and cost enough to only be affordable to the wealthiest of families.
Notable Locations
Carver's Quarter
The Carver's Quarter is the hub of the woodworker's guild in Mosshaven. It is comprised of nine square blocks. The outer blocks are filled with workshops and small stores, while the center is filled by a covered market in which many craftsmen and artisans hawk their wares. It is said that one can buy a whole house's worth of furniture within an hour or two while visiting the Carver's Quarter. It is bordered to the north by the lumber yards of Mosshaven, where all of the city's lumber is stored and initially processed. Woodworkers can purchase their lumber directly from the lumberyards at a lower price than at the wagonyards, where the lumber is put onto wagons to deliver to other cities and ports.
Temple of Xitos
As a city of craftsmen, Mosshaven has an affinity for Xitos, deity of craftsmen and the arts. There is a temple located close to the government's offices that is frequented by many craftsmen seeking god fortune and inspiration with their work. Unlike the majority of Mosshaven, it is made primarily out of stone, and its more delicate design helps it to stick out from the sturdy wooden and half-timbered buildings of the rest of the city. Its doors are made of ironwood, the sacred wood of Xitos. A large stained glass window sits a story above the doors and just below the vault. Inside, it is a rather simple building, with a central chamber of floored in pine and lined with stone benches. Galleries above look into this main chamber and onto the altar which is decorated with the holy symbols of Xitos.
Council Building
The council building of Mosshaven is the center of all its governmental activity. Here, the head council meets to discuss important matters. Like the Rosewick Compound of Balihr, it is also the home to other governmental bodies, in particular the committees that help supervise and advise the head council. The council building is built on the highest point in Mosshaven, a hill in the southeast part of the city. Members of the public are not generally allowed into the building except for hearings, but they may submit letters to the council to bring things to their attention.
