Spooktober prompt - eerie

It was the early morning hours, sun hadn't even risen yet... it was late September. I was woken by a weird noise behind my window, and couldn't get back to sleep, so I thought I'd go and check on the horses in the stable. Quietly, so I wouldn't wake my partner, I poured some water into my cup from the jug on the table, took my woollen dress and belted it over my nightgown. Then I added a cloak and wrapped a scarf around my head, and headed outdoors. As I stepped out, I almost couldn't see, it was so foggy. I set my foot towards the stable anyway, and found the path from old habit. I had a weird feeling of something not being right, but I could not place it. I did not hear any more weird sounds, nor see anything in the fog. The stable door was ajar, first real sign of something being wrong. I always locked it for the night. I tapped the lantern outside the door with my finger, and it lit up, with it's familiar yellow glow. I carefully pulled on the stable door, and it opened softly. I tapped another lantern on the inside, and a soft light filled the stable.   I looked around me. Nothing seemed out of place yet... As I walked down the corridor, I lit all the lanterns. The horses were awake and kind of restless, looking around and stamping impatiently. They hardly seemed to notice me, which was highly unusual. Something must have spooked them. Then the last lantern would not light up however much I tapped it. These lanterns should not behave like that, I had them specifically made by the local shaman. I was thinking frantically, who or what could have tampered with it, when I heard a creaky noise. Our doors didn't creak, and I jumped away from the sound looking around me wildly. The horses got more restless, one of them neighing in fear. Then all the lights went out, and I heard hooves run on along the corridor, until they disappeared out through the door. I was paralyzed by fear for a moment, but after no other sounds for a short while, I dared to tap one of the lanterns. It lit straight up, and I quickly ran to do the same with all the others. I could immediately see, one of the doors was open, and one of the horses was gone, Veigvisa, a youngster. The others were still restless, but getting calmer.   I had no idea what or who could have been in the stable. I didn't hear any human noise before, and the horses were not usually afraid of humans. I thought about running back to the house and waking everybody, but something told me it wasn't a good idea. So I went to the door, and carefully looked around. It was still very foggy, and I could not see much. However in the soft sand I saw hoofprints, they were headed towards the forest. Whatever it was, must have been riding on Veigvisa, or not be leaving any footprints. The thought filled me with dread, I was not used to things like this, and had no idea how to deal with any sort of otherworldly being. I rummaged my brain, thinking through everything my partnes had told me about the Otherworld and it's inhabitants since bringing me home. None of it was of much help, put salt to prevent them from coming in, copper keeps them away too... Most of them are harmless, but this one was clearly not. As bad as the idea felt, I decided to go and wake everyone. I made sure to close the stable door, and followed the familiar path back to the house. The events in the stable had not taken many moments, and it was still dark and foggy. I rushed, feeling like someone was following me or watching me, even though I heard no sound.   I ran the last steps, and opened the door, closing it immediately and fastening the copper hook. I heard now a weird rattling outside the door, but rushed to our bedroom my heart beating very fast. "There is something out there!" I panted, as I shook the duvet off my partner. He looked at me in a state of bewilderment, but as he saw my expression, he quickly got into his senses. "What do you mean something, my darling?" he sounded now very alert. "Is the copper hook fastened?" "Yes!" I cried. "I woke up by a weird noise, and went to the stables. One of the lanterns wasn't working, and then it all went dark and something stole Veigvisa," I tried to explain shortly and quickly. My partner's eyes widened and his mouth fell open in shock. I don't think I'd ever seen him get dressed so quickly. "Go and grab the large bag of salt from the kitchen, he told me, as he reached for his belt bag, the one he usually was not wearing. It was larger than the other bags hanging on his belt, and I did not know what this one contained. He was shaking his head as he put his hand in the bag and took out what looked like an ordinary necklace, an amulet hanging from a thin leather cord. He told me to wear it, and put a similar one around his own neck. I sprinted to the kitchen and back for the salt, and found him in the hallway as I came back.
