Rathnar Bryne
A legendary sailor who sailed the straight south of the mainland. His voyages were famed as the tales of Rathnar's Venture. The area he was from was later named after him, Rathven.
From Hiborane originally.
Legend has it that Rathnar Bryne was one of the greatest sailors to ever sail the seas of Galfin. His voyages were the stuff of legends, and each one was marked by incredible feats of bravery and adventure.
On his first voyage, Rathnar sailed south of Rathven and discovered a previously unknown island. He named it Bryne Island in honor of his family, and it would later become a major trading hub for the region. This hub was destroyed when the weary Pemban people had enough of the outsiders claiming their islands as their own. Snake idols and treasure funded many of his next ventures.
On his second voyage, Rathnar sailed west and encountered a massive sea serpent. He battled the creature for three days and three nights before finally slaying it with his sword. The serpent's scales were so valuable that Rathnar used them to fund his future expeditions. He worked alongside the sailors of Castrixia to defeat the beast. It’s scales were used as armour on his ship.
On his third voyage, Rathnar sailed west and encountered a tribe of merfolk. He made peace with the creatures and traded with them, learning about the hidden treasures of the ocean in the process. The people lived off the coast of what is now called Steelgale.
On his fourth voyage, Rathnar sailed east and discovered a long-lost city that had been buried by the sands of time. He explored the ruins and uncovered a great treasure hoard, including a powerful artifact that he would carry with him on all his future voyages. This artifact was found in Heka’Lu and allowed him to see ahead of him in the water while wearing the Glass of Seeing Seas.
On his fifth voyage, Rathnar sailed south again and discovered a hidden cove filled with cursed treasure. He battled the undead guardians and managed to escape with a single chest of gold, but the curse would haunt him for the rest of his life. The Haaixran Dead lingered longer than he expected as his eyesight was diminishing in his one eye.
On his sixth voyage, Rathnar sailed west once more and discovered a massive kraken. He battled the beast for a full day before finally managing to kill it with a well-placed harpoon. At this point it was becoming clear to Rathnar that the Castrixians were the best sea hunters to hire while exploring the Vast Sea. His spyglass was crafted into an eyepatch, allowing him advantage on the open sea as he could perceive all around him by placing his hand in the water.
On his seventh voyage, Rathnar sailed north and discovered a fleet of ghost ships. He managed to outsmart the undead captains and escape with a valuable treasure. He tried to sail through the Smokespear Sea but had to turn around.
On his eighth voyage, Rathnar sailed east and met the leader of the Ful’Rak. He was invited to witness the Crucible but was chased out by rampaging ogres when they discovered he stole treasure from them on his forth voyage. His eyepatch was a destroyed ancient treasure after all. He narrowly escaped the mysterious land of the Ful’Rak and opted never to return.
On his ninth voyage, Rathnar sailed south and discovered a lost island filled with giant beasts. He managed to slay the beasts and claim the island as his own. The Matatai elves would contest this new ruler as they returned from their wayfaring. These beasts were sacred to the elves but the hides funded more voyages.
On his tenth voyage, Rathnar sailed west and discovered a massive magical whirlpool. He managed to navigate through the dangerous waters and discover a hidden island filled with treasure from wood and dark elf alike. This island was on the back of a massive turtle.
On his eleventh voyage, Rathnar sailed north and discovered a hidden temple dedicated to the sea goddess. He made a sacrifice to the goddess and was blessed with good fortune for the rest of his life. This was called the Basin by the native Doth Kai, one of few permanent structures built by these people.
On his twelfth voyage, Rathnar sailed east and discovered a lost tribe of bone ogres. He learned their language and became a friend to their people, trading with them and learning their secrets. He even organized one of the ogres into the Crucible where he won and became their leade. Skulgnash the Tattered fought with flame swords and burned bones of his enemies.
On his thirteenth voyage, Rathnar sailed south again and discovered a hidden cave filled with cursed treasure. Once again a trove hidden by the landlocked people of Haaixr. He managed to escape with the treasure, but was injured, losing his leg and catching a troublesome fever.
On his fourteenth voyage, Rathnar sailed west and discovered a massive storm. He navigated through the dangerous waters and discovered a hidden island filled with valuable resources. The Water Wells are a known magical phenomenon that hide many secrets of other worlds. The tablets found speak of a Wolf Eyed Queen
On his fifteenth and final voyage, Rathnar sailed north once more and discovered a massive sea leviathan that was even larger than the one he had slain on his second voyage. He battled the creature for a full week before finally succumbing to his wounds and dying at sea. Despite his tragic end, Rathnar's legacy lived on, as his Voyages would inspire generations of sailors to come. Some say the fever was going to kill him anyways so he sailed with bravery and reckless determination knowing this tale would be sung about.
