Shocking Discovery, July 1, 2024

"Shy! You won't believe what I found in the basement! I'm glad you're sitting down for this..."

— Purpleheart runs in waving a book as she hunts down ShyRedFox who is trying to hide from interruptions at a desk tucked in the back of the House Meles library to get a bit of paperwork done.

Purpleheart pulls up a chair beside Shy and opens a dusty, leather-bound volume to a bookmarked page. "I found this in the library basement as I was directing the baby badgers to help clean up after the glitter monster fiasco. It's the late Great Badger's journal. Look here."
She slides it over to Shy, who moves her laptop out of the way, to get a good look. Purple points out a section. So Shy reads aloud from a passage dated 20 years before. "I'd kept these affairs quiet for years. But I must get it off my chest and find a way to provide for my two daughters. Despite their bastard status, my badger blood courses through their veins."
Shy pauses. "The old Great Badger...err...got around, didn't he?"
Purple pokes at the page again. "Keep reading. It's important!"
"This journal and the letter to my son on this in the Meles royal vault are the provision for my daughters, Purpleheart and Shyred..." Shy's voice cuts off.
Smoke billows from the spot where Shy sat, and a badger sits where the fox had been. The badger turns over it's paws and Shy's voice emerges. "P-purple! Wh-what the hell just happened?"
"I think you just...turned into a Werebadger...and the good news is you're my sister!" Purple moves side to side to get a better look at Shy's new form.
But Shy's eyes roll back and she slumps to the table.
"Shy? Shyyy-yy?" Purple pokes her passed out sister. "She didn't even read the part that says we're in line for the throne, behind any adult children that Darth Nikolas has. Nor did she see that he instructed Nik to request we serve as Seneschals to support Gala, so we could understand the weight of the crown. Oh crap. She's gonna faint again, I just know it."
With another puff of smoke, Shy's limp body returns to her usual fox form. But she's still out cold.
Purple taps her chin. "We need advice. And with the Great Badger MIA, our best bet is Queen Sable . After I get Shy revived, we'll make the call. When Gala returns, boy is he gonna be surprised! And what I really want to know is if Nik knew this all along..."

To head off questions when the news reaches the media outlets, here are the official answers from House Meles.

Can we be assured this is not a forgery?

The journal was examined by scientific and forensic experts and determined to be the age the journal dates claim. The handwriting has been confirmed to be the late Great Badger's. The entries also contain codewords that he often used.

Shy is the elder sister. Why is Purple ahead of Shy in line for the crown?

Purple and Shy are half sisters, though the names of the mothers aren't mentioned.
The journal talks about the late Great Badger's betrothal to a powerful noble woman. The lady broke off the engagement due to her allegations of an unsavory nature about the late Great Badger. After the break up, the noblewoman discovered she was pregnant with Purple.
Shy was the daughter of a commoner kitsune. (Though, the kitsune folk would never consider themselves common. The lady fox was not royalty.) This explains Shy's fox form in the GoT Verse.
Since Purple has more royal blood, she will be ahead of Shy in the line for the Meles throne.

How will being royals affect Purple and Shy's friendship?

They've been through thick and thin together already. So, they're sure the news won't change their friendship.

How will the Meles crown family take the news of even more relatives?

The House Meles succession line has changed, but it's impossible to tell how the rest of the royal family adults will take the news. Meles law prohibits the minor royals from being contacted for comment. It is unknown if the Great Badger Darth Nikolas (who is still missing along with his consort, as of this writing) knew he had sisters.
Regent Galakrond is also still MIA after the November war.

What will the new royals' titles be?

Purple and Shy will each have the title Princess Badger.

What happened to Shy? Why did she turn into a badger? Will it happen to Purple, too?

Shy has an identity crisis on her hands. While she wasn't born in a fox form, she's lived for years now with it. To change to badger form at random times (and rather inconvenient ones, to say the least) will take some getting used to. This may be due to a fight for dominance in her totem genetics. Hopefully, she'll gain mastery over the transformation.

Purple has not yet exhibited the peculiar change. This may be due to a dominant gene in her mother's bloodline.

When will the public be notified?

A Meles AllThing will be called to make the announcement of the change to the royal line. Then a GoT-wide press release will be made.
