SC2020 – The lesser city
When the City Senate was first founded there was an immediate problem – where should its headquarters be. None of the Great Cities were particularly fond of each other, they had only barely agreed to the establishment of the City Senate, because not doing so seemed it might mean eternal trench war. However, none of them were ready to let any of the other Great Cities be the host of this Senate, as surely, they host would have a greater say.
Several different versions of rotating systems were discussed, including versions where the hosting city would not sit in the senate for the duration they were hosting. However, no agreement as to how it would function or what the order or rotation should be could be found.
It was then proposed a new site for the senate should be found, a place that everyone could agree upon. This still let to the problem of everyone wanting the senate as close to their city as possible. It was decided that it should be equally far away from all the great cities. However, that was a physical impossibility, as the great cities do not lie in a big circle with an empty middle. It was proposed to find the spot furthest away from any great city, but when that turned out to be up in the corner of the continent, that was scrapped too.
In the end the City Senate ended up starting out as a caravan that was never to travel within a specified distance of any of the great cities and where to keep moving, so that the distance to each of the great cities was split equally over a period of 5 years.
Naturally, this was a huge mess and the City Senate was highly dysfunctional for it, it was almost a purely symbolic organization.
Then somehow - through the workings of the Black hand - on the 30th anniversary of the founding of the senate, it was decided that in order to become more efficient the City Senate would take up permanent seat in “The Lesser City” the ruined remains of Ydexli.
