Afnat

Afnat /a:fnaːth/ is a spoken and written lingua franca used among the different groups inhabiting the region of Þonnanó in southwestern Emlas, particularly the þonnani, vósali and hefmólans, as well as sanxean, both to ease communication with each other as well as with paróbaxi and imkalan merchants and other travelers visiting the land.

Writing System

Afnat is written using an abugida, with each letter being made up of a symbol representing a consonant or digraph connected to a curved 'base' or a smaller symbol above the base, representing a vowel. Syllables are shown by marking a vowel symbol above a letter, and words are indicated by linking the bases of letters together, while special vertical markers are used for hyphens and periods.
For example, ol afnat knok. (I write afnat) is written as:

Among the þonnani, it has replaced more traditional scripts for the most part when it comes to keeping records regarding trade and various contracts among commoners, and the vósali have increasingly begun using it to record various secular literature as well, including folk songs and poetry.

Vocabulary

Afnat is primarily based on the dialect of þonnanic used in and around the city of Údranajó, capital of the kingdom of So-najó-fnetap in northeastern Þonnanó and, to lesser extent, vósalic used along the coast of Galafam Sea to the south, along with loanwords for certain plants, animals and concepts which the two cultures have no native terms for.
