Rieta
Lost in the Storm
Rieta was born in The Howling Wastes, named both for the shape of the peninsula in the northernmost section of the icehost and the constant winds that blind and deafen it’s residents. Her tribe, originally from the Southern Coasts of the now-named Charhyan Federation were exiled from that land some 400 years ago. Their village was hit with 4 consecutive years of devastating floods. The superstitious citizens blamed the resident group of Tieflings and their infernal bloodline and forced the Tieflings to leave. Word of the exile spread quickly, and the exiles did not find a welcome home anywhere on their journey. Determined to find a new home, their leader, Arn, led them on a 10 year journey that ended in the Howling wastes, an area of refuge in an otherwise desolate landscape. Rieta had loving parents and a supportive community. She and the other women of the community hunted for the entire village, and on one hunting trip she became desperately lost in a snowstorm that lasted 6 days. After the wind and snow subsided on the 7th day, she found herself in the middle of a complete wasteland - no geographic features other than rolling hills of snow and ice. She tried to use the sun and stars to try to find her way back. On the 8th day, she went blind from the reflection of the sun on the snow. In a moment that was half determination and half panic - she set out at a full sprint. She had no idea in what direction. Rieta woke up in a moment of panic when she did not recognize the room she was in, but panic gave way to relief when she became aware of the soft bed she was in, the torches keeping guard on the walls, and the fire softly crackling in the corner of the room. Opening the door and stepping out of the room, she saw that her room was one of many on a mezzanine that hugged the walls of a great throne room. She walked to the railing and peered down. The throne room, which was at least 100 by 100 yards was full of all sorts of people, speaking softly with each other, some smiling and speaking casually, with others looking in deep conversation. They were all standing on Gavros, a massive map on marble that she would later learn encompassed the known world.Deneir’s Refuge
Rieta was at Deneir’s Refuge, the monastery built in honor of their patron Deneir, the God-Scribe of the Multiverse. Legend has it that Deneir established the refuge and monastery to do his work on Gavros. The Monks of Deneir (as they are called) are charged with mapping and recording the known world, including its geographical locations, characteristics, religions, populations, arts, wars and so on. They are famous everywhere in Gavros for the quality of their maps, known for both their accuracy and beauty. The monks have no political alignment and their maps are often used to wage terrible wars. They see this as an unfortunate by-product of an otherwise high craft. They see their maps and collections as the ultimate source of truth and will not shy away from documenting that truth, regardless of what comes of it. The location of Deneir’s Refuge is completely hidden from the world and exists on no maps. Members can be recruited and brought into the order by other monks and are first taken to the refuge blindfolded. Because Rieta arrived alone and blinded, it was the consensus of the order that she was sent by Deneir himself. She agreed to join (which required a good deal of persuasion from the elders) and quickly rose to a prominent member of the order. The Monks of Deneir
As a monk of Deneir, Rieta is charged with mapping the known world, while collecting as much information as possible along the way. The ultimate goal of the order is to map Vardura, the unknown land. The monks do not publicly advertise that they are in the order as this could only mean bad things for them and the order. Mapping the world means surviving in the world. The monks of Deneir train in martial combat. All monks are given weapons to train with that vary in type. The order presented “Deneir's Quill” to Rieta, a 6-foot spear with a razor point that never leaves her side.Physical Description
