The Nether
The Nether is a complex system of dimensional "Tracts," ruled over by various fiends and devils. Situated well below the material plane, these dimensions vary in size and breadth, with some impossibly expansive and others the size of a peasant's hovel. Rulers of the Tracts are constantly jockeying for influence and prestige within the intricate power structure of the Nether, further complicated by the fact that Tracts are constantly both created and destroyed, awash in the fiendish energy of the Nether.
Notable Tracts of the Nether
7th Tract of the Nether
An unending field of bones. Rumor has it that some long-dead deity was once imprisoned here. Those that stray here, even for a moment, report bouts of profoundly disturbing dreams.133rd Tract of the Nether
Valvardrad rules here with his second, Hommdar, the Herald of Honeybile. Due to Valvardrad's fondness for bee and bee-related entities, it resembles a giant hive and is known as the Teeming.487th Tract of the Nether
Nulzulghraz, called the Descended, exerts her will over this Tract, which resembles a dilapidated aristocratic estate. This Tract is often called the "Grounds of the Descended."492nd Tract of the Nether
Called the Blood Orchard, this tract resembles an overgrown forest weeping blood. The Forgotten Gardener has dominion over those that dwell here.3034th Tract of the Nether
Denizens of this Tract owe fealty to Avelkros the Grandfather, whose name is spoken of in awe. Avelkros the Grandfather remains in a immortal, endless wrestling match with Peltrik the Grandson, and, as such, nobody has seen him for quite some time. Forever, in fact.3035th Tract of the Nether
This Tract is the realm of Peltrik the Grandson, who is locked in an inevitable, ceaseless melee with Avelkros the Grandfather. Those who dwell on this Tract believe the Grandson's time is coming, and coming soon.9871th Tract of the Nether
Newly created, this Tract is occupied by an entity only known as "Simon." It is unclear what, exactly, Simon has done to create an entirely new Nether Tract, but, given precedent, it was likely both powerful and unpleasant for at least one party involved.Geography
Each Tract of the Nether is distinct and has its own distinct geographic features. For example, the defining trait of the 78th Tract could be said to be the frothing sentient volcano at the center of its demesne. Similarly, the unending glacial peaks of the 909th Tract are often the feature most remarked upon by visitors to Lady Sickle's domain.
It is said that the mere mention of the fungal marshes of the 287th Tract cause another "Doom Bloom" to occur.
Ecosystem
Much like the varied geography of the Nether, the ecosystem (or lack thereof) of each Tract is also distinct. Creatures beyond comprehension dwell on some Tracts, while others offer a perverted mockery of biomes on the material plane.
The 7th Tract, commonly called "Bonefields," seems devoid of life, or any indication that there was ever life. Some unfortunate travelers that have spent time there--those that somehow retain their sense of self--describe howling whispers that persist beyond understanding.
Localized Phenomena
As the ecosystems of each Tract are unique to their circumstances, so too are the occurrences of natural events in those ecosystems. The 637th Tract is situated deep within a cloud of perpetual lightning. Poison gas of at least three different varieties seeps from vents within the tangled vegetation of the 19th Tract, often called "Mama Geep's Vineyard." The 8063rd Tract known as the "Barbaric Yawp" is an impossible chasm, in which there is no ceiling and no floor.
Fauna & Flora
The smokewhales of the 23rd Tract, a black ocean ruled by Timmosoth the Brokefin, are well-known as fearsome warriors. The killfeather plant--a species native to Rufus' Crop, the 7191st Tract,--is said to be deadly even to look upon.
History
It is unclear as to how the Tracts of the Nether first coalesced to form what is commonly understood as the the configuration of the Nether. Current scholarly debate rages as to whether the Nether creates the fiendish energy that sustains it, or that fiendish energy gave rise--and continues to grow--the Nether. There is consensus, however, that the ramifications of either inciting incident are troubling.
Tourism
While certain Tracts encourage "tourism," it is understood that few visit any Tract of the Nether for leisure.
