Metallic Dragons
Basic Information
Anatomy
Metallic dragons possess two fore legs, two hind legs, a tail typically longer than its body, two massive wings, and a head. Typical wingspans of metallic dragons are anywhere between 18-30 feet, with some even reaching incredible 40 foot wingspans.
Growth Rate & Stages
A metallic dragon begins its life as a wyrmling, then reaches a young adult stage by around 50 years of age. From there, maturity and adulthood is at about 100 years of age, and ancient status is a milestone reached at about 800 years. A dragon reaches its largest size at 1200 years of age, and from there they persist until they reach a Twilight stage somewhere between 3200 and 4400 years where they begin to fade away and return to Bahamut. Some Metallic dragons attempt to persist beyond death, imbuing their fallen husks with radiant energy and becoming Hollow Dragons, the metallic counterpart to a villainous Chromatic dragon's Dracolich.
Ecology and Habitats
Each different color of dragon takes up a different habitat. Brass dragons abide in Geloriel's deserts and plains, Bronze dragons in aquatic and tropical regions, Copper in dry places like mountains and deserts, and Silver in high mountains. Gold dragons abide anywhere, though they prefer to remain in seclusion. When not vanquishing evil, mortals must seek out these dragons in their harsh climates in order to gain their favor and wisdom.
Behaviour
Metallic dragons are good-aligned creatures, with moral and just ideals. They seek to protect the people of Geloriel as Bahamut created them to do, and they wish to vanquish evil wherever it rears its head. They often clash with chromatic dragons, corrupted by Tiamat into opposing ideals and terrible greed.
Additional Information
Average Intelligence
Metallic dragons are highly intelligent creatures, known for their abilities of logical reasoning and swift learning. Even from hatching, they're as smart as an average adult human, and their knowledge only grows as they age for hundreds and thousands of years, accumulating immense knowledge and powerful secrets.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Metallic dragons possess blindsight out to around 60 feet and darkvision out to around 120 feet, allowing them to see in dark places and beyond merely using their eyes. Even still, draconic senses supremely exceed those of mortals, with dragons possessing vaster sight, enhanced hearing and enhanced smell.
Civilization and Culture
Major Organizations
The most prominent and widely-known faction among Metallic dragons is that of the Margraviate of Taria, led by the Margravine Viviane Faulhauber and inhabiting other metallic dragons, though few. Another organization followed by Metallic dragons includes the Church of Bahamut, a religious order dedicated to their Creator.
Average Technological Level
The Metallic dragons are a magically advanced species, many having the ability to innately use arcane magic from a young age. Other, more intelligent and curious dragons, seek out the actual study of the arcane, becoming powerful wizards in addition to their draconic powers.
Major Language Groups and Dialects
All Metallic dragons communicate in Draconic, and many have learned several different other languages from various peoples venturing out to find them, or by proximity to populated cities.
Common Taboos
One great taboo among Metallic dragons is seeking immortality through Lichdom rather than through becoming a Hollow Dragon, since it shows a bend towards evil and a desecration of the values of Bahamut.
History
In the First Age, the primeval Dragons were created as a joint effort by Bahamut, Tiamat and Sardior to watch over the mortal realms and protect them from the rising Primordials. During the First Divine War, however, Tiamat became corrupted by the whispers of the mad god Tharizdun, imbuing evil intent and elemental powers onto her brood, turning them into the first Chromatic Dragons. To protect the rest, Bahamut imbued the remaining dragons with his radiant blessing and metallic powers, creating the first Metallic Dragons. From that point on, Chromatic and Metallic dragons clashed throughout the ages, long after the end of the First Divine War, the sundering of Sardior and the sealing of Tiamat in the Nine Hells by Pelor and Bahamut. From the Second Age onward, many Metallic dragons were reclusive, coming into action when the world needed them but recognizing that mortals also had to learn to survive without their aid.
In the Fifth Age, near the end of the Time of Strife and the fall of the great Brekarian Empire, a bronze dragon named Moridormu found the nation that would soon become the Margraviate of Taria under the control of a tyrant once a member of the Brekarian High Court. Moridormu assumed an Elvish shapechange form, naming himself Moritz Faulhauber and rising to the aid of the people, deposing the tyrant leader and soon becoming the Margrave of Taria. Eventually, he had a daughter, naming her Vividormi, or Viviane in her shapechange form. When Moritz passed, Viviane assumed his position as Margravine, and leads the nation of Taria to this day.
