Anatomy

A sylphwood tree is typically very large, with a deep turquoise bark. It has many branches that hang almost like a willow tree, each with pale green leaves.

Genetics and Reproduction

When a sylphfruit is interred in the ground, it will begin to grow a sylphwood tree from where it was buried over the course of several years.

Growth Rate & Stages

It takes only a handful of weeks for a sylphwood sapling to sprout, and then it takes many decades for it to reach its full size. For some, hundreds of years pass before it reaches its apex. After that point, they stop growing, but they never cease to bear fruit unless they are cut down.

The sylphwood tree needs soil rich in nutrients and frequent water to maintain itself.

Biological Cycle

The sylphwood tree is an evergreen, so it is unaffected by the passing of the seasons, and keeps its leaves year round. Additionally, it only bears its fruit once every seven years, and only in the spring months of the year. If the fruit from a harvest is not consumed by the time the tree flowers again, the fruit rots and spoils. It otherwise remains in perfect condition for those seven years, even when stored at room temperature or in warm climates.

Domestication

Some sylphwood trees have been grown in captivity for the purposes of research, and others for their fruit. Sometimes, when grown in captivity, they are grown in much a similar way to bonsai trees, though that is mainly for decoration, as they do not bear fruit in that way. When grown in a smaller size, they live just as long if not longer, so they make for very good, long-lasting decorations.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The sylphwood tree is mostly used for its fruit, the sylphfruit. The skin of the fruit is a deep turquoise color, similar to but lighter than that of the bark of the tree. The pulp of the fruit is a much paler blue, almost white color, with a very rich and sweet taste. When consumed, it fills the eater with a pleasant feeling that reminds them of their happiest memories, and fills them with the mirth and joy of the Seelie court. When consumed, it permanently increases either the consumer's Wisdom or Charisma score by 2, or each by 1. A stat cannot be raised above 20 in this way. The DM chooses which stat is increased this way. A creature can only benefit from this stat increase once, though they feel the pleasant feeling each time they eat of the fruit. Eating a spoiled fruit instead permanently decreases both the eater's Wisdom and Charisma by 2, as the sickly darkness of the Unseelie court runs through them. A remove curse spell or similar magic can undo this reduction.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The sylphwood tree can be found naturally all across the Wildwood, and has been grown artificially in certain gardens across Lanora and in Lunaeris, most often for study, to marvel in its beauty, or for its delicious fruits.
