Dwarves

The dwarves are a semi-subterranean to subterranean race that occupies high mountain ranges through Sossis and an unknown range underground. They are a mysterious people, very reserved, and seldom interacting with the surface. They have, at several times in the past, retreated entirely underground and ceased all interaction with the surface for centuries at a time before tepidly reemerging.   Dwarves are a proud and stubborn people. Many will spend their entire lives underground, never even seeing the surface, nor having wanted to for that matter. That said, they will still regularly make contact with the surface, trading for goods only procurable from the surface and selling crafted goods. They are considered exceptional smiths and artisans.   They've been around a long time, much longer than humans, toiling away in their underground cities. It was the dwarves that allowed humans knowledge of magic by giving them knowledge of the Elvish language. They keep to themselves underground, occasional feuds erupting between clans, completely unknown to those above. They don’t like to share their history with any but their kin, and chronicling Dwarven history has been the frustrating life’s work of many scholars, who find the task of getting a dwarf to tell anything other than exaggerated tall tales of their personal heroism a near futile effort. What they do share with the world above they are quite proud of; they deny having built the giant ruins in Northern Trofiriya, citing shoddy workmanship as the reason. That said, they have reason to be proud of their work, Dwarven metallurgy and stonemasonry are unparalleled. Not to mention only Dwarven craftsmen have the knowledge and skill required to work blackglass into advanced magical foci. Among them are some of the best magical scholars in the world, who are reluctant to share their knowledge with the other races. They are not naturally inclined to magic, but are quite adept at imbuing objects with magical essence.   They are not known for wanderlust or any real sense of adventure. They become accustomed and comfortable with the way things are and will seek to resist change at every opportunity.   They are stout, stocky, and either fat or muscular. They have brunette to dark reddish hair, though dwarves have been known to dye their hair. Facial hair obviously comes easily to them, and serves as a source of pride for them.   Proud, loud, stubborn, and industrious, dwarves live at the highest mountain peaks and make their homes deep below in tiered city-strongholds. They’re known throughout the lands as skilled craftsmen and artificers, peerless miners, and loyal companions, should one be able to make one. They are an uncommon sight outside the lands of the Nenians and the Turghesh with whom they share their mountainous homeland, and many never venture past their mountain homes. Apparently great tunnels through the earth connect their various outposts in a great subterranean web, parts apparently so ancient they predate the dwarves’ memory and record. They keep many secrets and will warn men away from these tunnels with tales of horrifying beasts and creatures capable of calling on magics infinitely more diabolical than even the most occult and taboo rituals ever practised on the surface with whom they can parley only because of compacts so ancient even their forefathers have forgotten their date. Men are welcomed into some of their cities, while others turn them away, some turning away any from the surface, others dwarves included, though few men ever venture to any on account of their incredible remoteness and the inhosptitable trek to reach them. The largest and most well known of these are Mroget Ukkbyr, Nchurmyz, and Ttall’un.
