Fleshless

Lost souls, those that come up from the Underdark, the fleshless live miserable lives of aimless wandering. Most people simply see a monster, a walking corpse, and so they live on the fringes of society, scavenging what they can, and avoiding contact and detection.   Very little is known of these folk. The dwarves will say little, but they do say they come up from far below, that they once were men, and that they deserve pity. Various legends of their origins abound, but no more than legends. One of the most famous is that a man trapped down far below the earth ate one of the sacred rats of the goddess of decay out of desperation or not knowing its divine importance, and was cursed by the goddess with rotting skin and unendurable hunger.   They are bruised, rotting, decaying. A body with no skin, flesh a dusky blue or black. They look like a man flayed and hung to dry, a desiccated mummy. They may have small patches of hair, and their voices are rough and strained. Masks and disguising magics see common use in order to ease their relations with society.
