Inventory

The inventory system is based on a grid. As a base, a character can carry an object no more than 1 grid space wide and no more than 8 grid spaces long with one hand, except for objects with a handle (such as shields or a backpack), which can be up to 3 spaces wide, and can carry an object no more than 4 grid spaces in its smaller dimension in both hands. Backpacks, sacks, pouches, and pockets can be used to extend the available inventory of a character.   A backpack can be one of three sizes: small (12 spaces, 3×4), medium (18 spaces, 3×6), or large (24 spaces, 4×6). A Small creature or a creature with a Strength score less than 7 cannot use a large backpack, and a creature with a Strength score less than 5 cannot use a medium backpack. A creature cannot utilise more than one backpack. Items in the backpack can be retrieved using an action.
A sack is carried either over the shoulder, worn like a backpack, or attached to the outside of a backpack. A sack has a capacity of 4 grid spaces (2×2), and the item(s) inside can be accessed with a bonus action.
A pouch and a pocket each have a capacity of 1 grid space. A pouch can carry up to 500 coins of any type. A pouch may be strapped to a belt, or to a backpack. A pouch strapped to a belt is treated like a pocket. The item in a pouch can be accessed with a bonus action, like a sack. The item in a pocket can be accessed using a free action. A character may have up to five pockets.
A frog is a special kind of apparatus that can be used to carry a melee weapon with a width of 1 space and a length between 2 and 4 spaces. A weapon can be drawn from or sheathed into a frog with a free action. A character may have up to two frogs.   Some items can be individually strapped to a backpack, such as bows or lanterns, and can be retrieved using a bonus action. Items actively equipped, such as armour, clothes, a backpack, sacks, pouches, quivers, or things carried in the hand, do not occupy inventory space. Sacks, pouches, and other items can be attached "alongside" a backpack, meaning you can adjoin them to both of the longer sides of the grid of a backpack. If an item has non-square dimensions, it must be attached along its longer side. For example, if attaching to a medium backpack, which has a grid length of 6 spaces, you may attach up to 12 spaces long of additional sacks, pouches, and items, such as, along one side, a shortbow (3 long), a sack (2 long), and a lantern (1 long), and along the other side a collapsable 10-foot pole (4 long) and another sack. An item up to 2 grid spaces longer than the long side of a backpack may be attached to the side of the backpack (so long as nothing else is attached to that side), however the wearer will suffer a -2 to Agility while in this configuration. For example, a pike (8 long) may be attached to the side of a large backpack, but the wearer will suffer the Agility penalty until it is removed.   Most adventuring gear items will occupy 1 grid space. Weapons are highly variable in how much space they occupy. A suit of armour occupies between 4 spaces (2×2) and 9 spaces (3×3).
