Spell Fatigue
When a person tries to exert themselves further then their capability, their body becomes stressed to a point that could lead to issues. This applies to spellcasters trying to cast spells long past their ability. Spell Fatigue works different for different types of spellcasters, as some are more innately tied to magic then others.
Once a mage casts a spell slot outside their used spell slots, that person must make a roll using their spellcasting ability with the DC equaling 8 + twice the level of the spell. If the caster makes the DC they succeed without any issues, but on a failure they gain a level of exhaustion determined on the level of spell slot used. Per the chart below:
Spell Slot | lvl of Exhaustion |
---|---|
1-3 | 1 |
4-6 | 2 |
7-9 | 3 |
Features or abilities to change the roll cannot be used for Spell Fatigue, like luck or divine favor.
As Bards, Druids and Sorcerers are more innately able to cast spells that are able to use this feature once per long with advantage.
Warlocks can only use this feature once per long rest without rolling. Every time after they must roll with disadvantage.
For reference, remember that Spell casting ability doesn't include proficiency.
